Car won't start stuck on N gear

i have a mercedes e320 (rwd) automatic yesterday at night i started my car normally to leave my parking and after i switch from D to R the car wouldn't accelerate anymore and i turned off the car and it would start back i switch gears and try to start it, it wouldn't work on my cluster it says on which gear it is but i feel like its stuck on Neutral since i could move it.
Anyone had an issue similar?

There is a press-on fastener that looks like a washer that is supposed to keep the shift rod attached to the control selector on the transmission. Mine popped off a couple years ago and I had the same symptoms you described.

If it's the same issue, you can fix it yourself for cheap if you do it yourself, less than $10. You won't need any tools, the washer just presses back on, but you have to be able to get under the car safely.

Take some initiative and look under the car. The rod from the shifter to the transmission is clearly visible from under the car. If there is a problem with where it attaches to either the transmission or the shifter, you'll be able to see it very quickly.

Can you safely get under the car? Do you know where the transmission is? If the answer to both questions is "no", then get the car towed to a garage.

Check the owners manual there is a section on how to by pass the stuck shifter. Basically under the shifter cover plate is a button you press with a long thin rod. Check your manual for details.

Is the rod make out of plastic? Ours broke and the wife could not start the car. 230.00 to replace it. What ticked me off is that it was not covered under the extended warrantee.
