Broken Fastener.
1 Attachment(s)
I took out my engine cover to change air filters and while unscrewing the T25 Torx fasteners to remove filters, I found one of the fasteners broken in half. Apparently last person who changed air filters tightened it too much and left it broken in there.
The part remaining in there is the half with no torx head, so I have no way of getting it out. Does anyone have any suggestions how to remove that half headless fastener? |

Supposed to be really good on screws and bolts... there also exists speed out pro:

The problem is your drill can slip and drill the plastic, You must use a rigid drill not hand drill and drill very slowly to start the hole. You could add a external strap bolted on as a new attachment if all else fails.

I was finally able to drill thru that air filter housing fastener/screw and I got it out using "screw Extractor," but looks like there are no replacements sold separately.
I took it to dealer today and asked to purchase a replacement. I was told they did not sell the screw as a separate part, but they could sell me the entire housing. I heard that and I was speechless. I could go to a wreck yard and get one, but none is close to my area! Does anybody have an extra screw out there they're willing to sell me? |
If you can wait till Monday, I believe that I have the part numbers for the fastener and insert!!

It's just a fastener! My local truevalue has a nice selection of metric fasteners

Take urabags advice!! |
So, am I able to purchase that fastener separately, or do I have to get the entire air filter/engine cover housing?
And does anyone have a part number if I could get it separately. If not, I may have to hit Truevalue and company. |
This evening, I went to Home Depot, Truevalue, and Ace. No Luck. At Ace, guy said I could use a sheet metal screw with same diameter, but when I compared them, thread was not even close.
I'm thinking this fastener could be had from other cars. Near me, there is a junk yard that has a lot of W210, but no W211, could a W210 be a source for that fastener. Like I said, if you've got one and don't have a need for it, I'll be buy it from you! |
You'll find that screw in the same place on W203, W208 and others. You should also be able to walk into the dealer parts dept and they can get you one quickly. Just take the broken one.

I'll check for W203 and W208 at the junk yard. |
I feel bad for implying this would be easily found at a hardware store. What you need to be looking for is Thread forming screws for plastic. Chances are, you may find something close, but not likely exactly what you need.
Closest I can find are bone screws. It might be cheaper to get the whole airbox assembly from MB... ;) |
I looked up the air filter housing on EPC and indeed the screws are not listed as parts. I took the part number for the whole air filter housing (A2730901201) and went to mbpartsworld.com (MB dealer just south of me) and when I entered that part number I was able to get an exploded view. From that I was able to get a part number. 0019846629 It doesn't list the W211 as one of the vehicles but I believe that is the screw you need. It is used all over all the cars... it just happened to show up in that exploded view.
Here is a link for the screw: http://www.mbpartsworld.com/p/__/BOL...019846629.html Here is the link for the exploded view that shows the screw (45): http://www.mbpartsworld.com/p/__/BOL...019846629.html |

Called same dealer who wanted to sell me entire housing. I gave guy in Parts the part number 0019846629 and bingo! He said it would come from East Coast, takes about a week. My question is why couldn't he find that part number in first place? Maybe he needs extra training in EPC? Glad that was a good ending :zoom: |
How much was the bolt at the dealer? I think it's 70 cents to $1 online but then there's shipping so the dealer is probably cheaper with their markup.
