Engine mounts and wheel bearing tightening
Hello -
I took my E350 to the dealer yesterday. The diagnosed 4 engine mounts at about $725 and "tightening the front wheel bearings" for $130. Questions - Do these prices seem reasonable? - The car has close to 100k miles on it. Should engine mounts go this soon? - What does wheel bearing tightening consist of? I've never heard of. Thanks in advance - David |

Fortunately the Wife was not injured. They messed something up and the wheel hub came off. They fixed it at their costs but needless to say.. they don't tighten wheel bearings on MB anymore. :) |
3 mounts, 2 engine 1 transmission. Bearings have a specific preload set. Normally in inch pounds of preload. No reason to be in a bearing unless you had a problem, they were working to solve or alignment. Otherwise I would be suspicious of the total job based on the tighten wheel bearings as a single item.

With the front wheel bearing on a non-4matic, there is no 'preload'. There is a bearing play measurement needed to do the job correctly. See here http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w211...earings-2.html Note the attachment at post #12. I wouldn't have the bearings tightened for $130 unless they are to be repacked with fresh grease. Not a difficult DIY FWIW. Not sure about the engine mount count of 4 either for your V6, but 725 parts and labor from the dealer is not a bad price IMHO. |
