E350 Check engine light - heating cooling system failure

My check engine light came on I took the car to a Benz garage and they told me the read-out code said "heating cooling system failure". I have driven the car for about 150 miles since the engine light came on. Does anyone know how serious this is? And what I should do about the problem. Can I drive the car without doing damage?

2006 E350 62,000 miles

Thanks!

Your garage must not have a Mercedes star diagnostic system. If they did they should have been able to tell you what exactly is in need of repair or replacement. As to driving, I would not do it until you have it diagnosed properly and repaired.

Do you have the error code? If you are getting a check engine light related to cooling I wouldn't be driving the car at all until you know what it is talking about. It could be a thermostat issue either stuck open or closed but i suspect it would be stuck open as otherwise you would have probably killed your engine by now. But that is just one thing it could be so many different things.

Thanks for the replies.

The garage that I took the car to was a local Mercedes/BMW shop not a dealer. The car was at average temperature and ran fine when the light was on. Yesterday I backed it out of my garage and the check engine light was off? I don't know if a shop can tell what the problem is with the check engine light off?

Yes the shop can read past faults until they are cleared by a computer.
