ABS reluctor rings and rear hub removal

I'm replacing the ABS reluctor rings in the rear end (both sides) and I'm not entirely sure where to go next, I am down to the hub and cannot figure out how in the world this thing comes apart, the hub appears to be able to pull right off of the axle but what I'm worried about is the bearing, I have a hub puller but do not want to go just pulling this out without knowing exactly what I'm up against. There's four reverse torx type bolts on the inside that are impossible to get a socket over with the way the axle tapers inward when it meets the hub and it doesn't look like the bolts are meant to come out until the wheel carrier assembly is somehow away from the axle, I can't find very much in terms of images, videos, or how-to's, can anyone point me in the right direction? I just need to know how this thing comes apart and I'll be fine, I have the rings already and I've disconnected most all components aside from the axle itself that attach to the wheel carrier. If I pull the hub with a puller will it just slide off and by itself? Or will the bearing come with it? I've attached a picture, any help is appreciated. Thanks

Car is a 2004 E320 4M

I think after disconnecting the wheel carrier you should be able to pull the axle out and access the ring.
I just did the front boots on 4M and rear looks similar.

Great info, thank you guys. Going to try and finish this up today! :y :zoom:

Take some pictures.
What I noticed in front, the reluctor rings are sealed with what I think is resin - making it rust-resistant. That is good upgrade from older MB.
I wonder if they are the same in the rear and why do you have a problem with them.

Will do

Here's a few photos. Wasn't too difficult, I did it with two jacks and a pretty basic set of tools. Very happy to inform that it did indeed solve my limp mode issue, (ABS and ESP errors)

Remove the wheel, then the caliper

Remove the rotor, there's one small hex bolt holding it in place

Unbolt all suspension links except for the lowest one on the bottom

Using a puller to pull the hub/wheel carrier out

The ABS ring is 3 1/4" in diameter, I improvised

Done! Just saved myself about $900. Solved my ABS/ESP errors and got the car out of limp mode

If anyone wants a more in-depth write up, feel free to ask I would happily do so.

Thanks for very informative pictures. I need to go through the same process and I have two questions:
1. What is the neccesary tighting torque on the big shaft center nut ?
2. Must the rear wheels be tracked/ajusted after all suspension links has been unbolted ?

reluctor ring removal

hi mate not long had my e320 and the ring on mine has broke up seen your thread does the shaft have plenty of room to get it out to do the ring and does it need anything to bond it to the shaft
thanks

It is a 31 mm 12 point socket for the Spindle Nut ?

Mtrester92 05-15-2019 09:49 PM

@Nx04benz where did you find those abs rings?

kajtek1 05-15-2019 11:39 PM

In the past those rings were available only in Europe and UK had some sites that would ship to USA
US dealers did not supply them, so you'd have to buy whole axle.
Times change, so never hurts to double - check.

hi
got first one from Mercedes dealers but you can get them on eBay they are exactly the same
