Keyless Go Doesn't Unlock Driver's Door

The door unlocking function doesn't work on my Driver's door. It works for the other doors and the liftgate but doesn't for the driver's door. Before I purchased the car i assumed the batteries in the key were weak as the keyless go function was acting a little funny. New batteries made it work as it should with all but this door.

What's the best way to go about diagnosing the cause and implementing a solution?

Do the buttons wear out? Is there an antenna inside the door that might have become dislodged? Any other ideas?

Thanks

Eric

The vast majority of the case it's the buttons inside the door handle that are worn out. Water tends to get inside them and corrode them. I was lucky enough to catch it and the dealer that sold it to me ended up replacing 3 door handles. After less than a year, another one of the door handles that were replaced went, but luckily, Mercedes does a 12 month/12k parts and labor warranty on repairs so it was covered. My guess is that at the dealer it's going to be about $500 or so as the handle alone lists for around $300. Try huskerparts.com for a price there, the door handle has different colors. Somewhat of a toss up, probably a little over $200 to mail order the handle and it's about a 1/2 hour DIY, 5 minutes if you've done it before. I've noticed on the newer models that they seem to be using a touch sensor so maybe you don't have to replace the door handles as much in the newer generation.

The door does look like it was touched up. Maybe they screwed up the reinstall?

Thanks

There is a 3 pin connector behind the door handle. There's a DIY about replacing the door handle. Your only chance would be that if it weren't plugged in, but I doubt it, those handles go bad all the time.

I recently purchased a 09 E63 and I had the same problem except it was the two front doors. The two rear doors worked and so did my trunk, had the dealer replace my key battery and it did not help the problem. The dealer had to replace the sensors to the doors. Luckily they took care of it when I purchased the vehicle.

Is the sensor even serviceable?

I thought the electronics were all epoxy potted but the post above implies the sensors are replaceable.

Thanks

It's really two micro switches burried in epoxy. The problem is finding the exact same size switch. It's not something MB sells as their solution is to replace the entire handle. I think in some other thread someone had mentioned fixing it, but they found a switch in an old fax machine and used that one. To get at those switches you also have to tear into the rubber part of the handle and hope you can put it together again. The real problem is that even with the epoxy, it's not really well sealed against the weather and will eventually corrode so you end up having to replace the handle. Only suggestion would be to hold onto your receipt, I think you should have a one year warranty on parts.
