545 is faster, but with manual. Actually, it looks like new Acura TL is faster that 545, however I do not encourage you to buy TL. From other side, check the latest Edmund's review of 530 and they found certain design flaws in it, which 545 has as well. So, E500 is only choice for now.

Just out of curiosity, why do you think Acura TL is not a good choice.

One of the reasons that I drive a Mercedes E-class is that it is a rear wheel drive vehicle. The Acura is front wheel drive. I have owned and raced Saabs and Mini Coopers both on the track and ice racing and they are fine for fun but I am not comfortable with subjecting my wife to the handling characteristics of a front wheel drive car. In an emergency situation the natural tendency a driver has is to take their foot off the accelerator and go for the brake which in many cases is the wrong solution.

[/B][/QUOTE] I prefer RWD cars also, but what you described is more of an issue with RWD than FWD. Anyone that ever drove a BMW320 would know this situation very well, however that was 20 years ago and most RWD cars now you would have to intentionally try to make that happen...

To digress from the discussion of FWD vs. RWD and return to the original question of "which is faster, E500 or 545i?": That's an easy one. The E500 is limited (in the US, anyway) to 130 MPH and the 545i to 155. So, the 545i wins the top-speed derby by a good 25 MPH.

Oh, by "faster", you meant "acceleration"? Hmmm. That introduces a lot of new variables, including road conditions, driver skill, what speed range you are talking about (0-60? 0-100? 50-70?) whether traction control is on or off, and which driver in a street race is the bigger reckless moron. Published acceleration figures won't help you much there.

I would think that with the e500's torque curve being so flat and so low in the powerband that it would "feel" faster as far as acceleration goes

While I haven't driven the new 545, I can tell you that the old 540 was wicked fast, or at least it felt like it. The E500 to me typically feels a little sluggish. Sure, once you get this thing going, it goes fast, but it takes a little time for it to respond. In either case, I would say that the 545 would be tuned in a more sporty way, and would therefore at least feel like it was accelerating faster, and probably would.
