Unhappy My E320 (Bluetec) is blowing F57.. narrowed down to this..HELP!

After returning from vacation, I started my car (sat for 2 + weeks), ran fine for about 1 min, then died...

Unable to start or turnover. Electric Radiator fan kicks off like it wants to leave without the car.

Found f57 (25 AMP) popped. Replaced..popped..replaced popped.

Tried my OBD2 reader, nothing..error.

Started digging/researching, finally went to my indie shop, he shared the diagram showing what fed off F57..

Of course my ECU (without power, won't talk to anything) is on it as is the relay that kicks on the fan (by design).

Indie said new ECU...about $2k. Ouch!!

I got into my ECU (what more damage can I do....hehe...indie says it's toast..WTH). Everything looked fine, no shorts, not charred pieces, looked fine.

Traced 12V in and outs (without pinouts it's time consuming). Traced 12 V feed/line that is going to 'shorted' device. What is this?

I put a 100Watt 12 light in series. Lights up real bright (short still there).

But at least now I can talk to ECU and it gives me some codes, which I think are from my leaving some sensors disconnected.

I trace the blue wire and it goes to AC compressor.. (I have a fox/hound toner), I'm going to trace the RED wire next, it would be nice if someone knew what the connector is for.

It sits right on top of the ECU and is well sealed. I'm attaching a picture and the RED line that is going to whatever is shorted.

I think if I find my short, I can try to start the car.

With the line open...engine will NOT turn over.

Any ideas?...anyone.......anyone........Buller?

Cheers

Update: I found my short (the glow plugs had recently been serviced), the cap to one of the plugs was cracked enough to expose the glow plug tip that had shorted to a sensor (all the cables are shielded with a braided metal/aluminum sheath) cable, you could see the smoke residue near the Turbo egress tube. It had fused together the pair of wires going to that sensor. Once I repaired the fused wires and replaced the cracked plastic insulating cover, my short was gone, fuse did NOT pop, engine started right up. (as a result of removing the Turbo egress tube, the o-ring to seal it at the turbo had broken..another series of fault codes, but that is fixed as well). My baby is back!!!

And you still have $2K in your pocket. I'd be sorely tempted to to go back to the indy and scream out "SUCK IT, B!+CH!" but in the interest of future relations would probably tone it down a bit and explain that it wasn't the ECU at all and had he thrown one at it the problem would still be there. Then tell him what the problem actually was.

Good job on the troubleshooting.

My Chevy duramax lost it's AC and glow plug indicator last summer. Careful troubleshooting and schematic studying led me to the void beneath the fuse box where a mouse had set up shop. Apparently, the green and blue wires taste better than the rest. Fixed the wires, good to go.

oh..too funny. Any Krispy Crits? Reminds me of a Squirrel that had decided to setup/homestead in an outside wall by the foyer entrance. You could hear him scratch and knock around as he came in and out. One evening, as I was home and the fam had returned with hands full, they rang the doorbell (to get dad to help them out/in), at the exact moment I hear little muffled screams come out of the wall area (near vautl), the kids keep hitting the door bell and screams kept coming..until finally a huge thump..then silence. We wondered if the Squirrel survived, (well this was in the fall and no clue or noises through the winter) by next summer though we KNEW he was toasted and maybe a little under cooked, as the stink was pretty strong, then the flies came, then nothing.

Had to get a contractor to cover the hole they gnawed at the eave. I started the put on my Bill Murray hat and start to scheme how to be rid of these guys.
