Fuel odor upon fill-up

Following fuel fill-up (I do not top off) and returning to my garage, I can smell fuel odor, especially emanating from around the rear door areas. I suspect that my beloved '09 has succumbed to the fuel system leakage problem addressed by M-B's extended warranty coverage bulletin issued in March, 2015.

So here's my question: If your W211 had a similar problem and it was repaired under the aforementioned extended warranty, did the repairs solve the problem? Which components were replaced?

Thanks in advance for all responses.

Tank replacement solves the leak problem.

Dealership replaced the entire tank on mine - no problems since.

Would I face giving somebody's $1000 tank for free, I would rather not discuss it over the phone as well.
Keep us posted how the inspection goes and check the forum HOW to describe the problem

So I was called back after dropping my car off off and they said I need a new fuel tank and it's 3900 dollars and that no fuel tank leak campaign exist and there is no 15 year warranty that they know about ,

sounds like somebody just had $3900 dropping from the sky.
Out of principals I would call 800 FOR MERC and report that dealer refused to honor warranty till you kicked him
I wonder how many busy professionals who drive MB and don't have time to read forums - simply pay up?

There's no reason she should be scared to drive it. The issue has been investigated ad nauseam by the NHTSA and MBZ and (even after numerous lawsuits) they concluded that the leaking fuel poses no risk of igniting. (To settle the issue, MBZ issued a voluntary recall).

The smell, that's another story - in the meantime, while you get it fixed just don't top it off when you fuel up.

Amazing how many things that sound danger are consider safe on the cars.
I had wire burning out on fuel pump in ML55.
The pump was inside fuel tank. Can you picture sparking and melting electrical wire submerged in fuel???
But there is no oxygen in fuel tank, so MB never had a recall on those things, although they went extra way to keep the knowledge from the public.
Frankly even I agree that fuel vapors under rear seat are not high danger for car fire - I would make DW to practice fast vehicle exiting.

lmao

this a safety hazard. And is somewhat dangerous. There are electrical components inside and outside of fuel tank. Also if tank is leaking, then there is oxygen somewhere that could mix with evaporated fuel. A puddle of gas chilling near your electrical connectors for your sending units isn't exactly safe by any means.... If the puddle is large and leaks down/behind fuel tank directly about your exhaust pipes, then yes, Hommies wife has all reason to be afraid to drive. Chances of that happening slim, however you know how some people are.

Kajtek1 is correct, you should say something about the dealership trying to pull the "WE are unaware of such things" I'm calling BS. And he is also correct in regards to something being shorted and causing a spark.

Hopefully getting the car in the Dealership soon. I had a appointment on the 11th, but had to cancel due to other issues with the car. I will not let my wife drive until the replacement parts have been secured and I deem it clear to drive. Tks to all for inputs I appreciate the words.

Small crack\split in filler neck on mine was told a complete tank replacement was needed at around $2000. Workaround is not to completely fill tank to the top, apparently this has been an issues on a few W211 from the research I've done and no this is not covered by any warranty or recall here on NZ I've checked directly with Mercedes.

Anyone had any luck trying to fix the crack\split in tank\filler neck themselves?

MB USA is not spending the big money on tanks replacement without good reason.
I know NZ is having much smaller population of lawyers, that is probably why you don't have recall there, but depends how good relation you have with your local MB representative, you can print pdf above and ask them for goodwill repair/replacement.
Good luck.

Its fixed, I hope

The problem was resolved yesterday. My dealer replaced the auxiliary fuel pump+inner tank module (the source of the fuel leakage), and filter assembly (and some assoc. bits and pieces). All charges were covered under M-B's voluntary Recall dated 03/2015.

WOW. You can't be native to California.
They ALWAYS fill up the garage with $700 worth of crap and keep the $70,000 car fading on the sun.
Enjoy the drive.
