Burning Oil Smell
 

Was smelling burning oil especially when heater turned on. A quick look revealed a oil leak on the back passenger side of engine. The oil leak was coming from Centrifuge Housing Cover. Oil splattering everywhere. I cleaned up as much as possible. After much seaching, found the Oil Seperator (Centrifuge) Housing Cover Part #: A 272 010 06 31 on Amazon for $13.44. Saw prices as high as $70+. I simply purchased the least expensive one. There are a few different part numbers but they are all appear to be the same part from what I can tell.

How to replace Oil Seperator (Centrifuge) Housing Cover.

Tools: T30 Torx Bit and tool for bit

1. Remove air box.
2. Remove hose attached to housing cover. Pulls off with a little force.
3. Use T30 Torx Bit and tool to remove 4 housing cover screws.
4. Rock housing cover to loosen each side and then pull straight off to remove.
5. Replace old housing cover with new housing cover. It will fit snugly over Centrifuge. You'll feel it snap into place.
6. Reinstall 4 housing cover screws.
7. Reconnect hose on housing cover.
8. Reinstall air box.

You might want to also check the driver's side on the back of the engine to see if there is another leak around the cam expansion plugs. I had to replace the oil separator cover as you did and also the cam expansion plugs at the same time.

Thanks stingray71. Actually, my cam expansion plugs did not have leaks. Have had no additional leaks since replacing the Oil Seperator (Centrifuge) Housing Cover.

I would HIGHLY advise against aftermarket oil separators. It will fail within a few months, if not weeks. You should not replace a high rate of failure part with a cheap aftermarket unit. FCP euro has OEM units for $48. You get what you pay for ultimately.

I had the same leak on the driver's side of my '08 E350. It was bad enough to leave a few drops on the garage floor every couple of days. I fixed it completely by first flushing the crankcase with for 25 minutes at idle, then changing the oil and substituting one quart with Marvel Mystery Oil. After 2,500 miles I repeated this process. Leak gone!

How could it be that simple, you might ask? I read on multiple sites that sludge is the leading cause of gasket leaks. The two products I recommended above are highly effective at softening and dissolving sludge.

From the picture posted by the OP, the oil leaking looks quite sooty and dirty! Sludge is mostly congealed soot, so a series of flushes as I've described is in order. You will notice better pick-up and a smoother, quieter engine.

I changed the oil centrifuge cover also along with the oil drip pan I also change the oil seperator and it’s like I’m still burning oil on the passenger side it’s not reaching the ground because it’s burning off on my cats. 2010 e550 4matic, I’m debating if I should take it to the shop or not also bought a new manifold and none of these where the problems. Any help is better than no help thanks advance

You have some micro-carbon particles in your seals. Change your crankcase oil, substituting one quart with Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO). Change every 1k miles for 3-5k miles. The seals will be flushed of dirt and become supple again, solving the problem. The leaks may even get worse for a time, but be patient! I should note that your oil looks pretty dirty to me, most likely due to soot for a variety of complicated reasons.

I had the same problem on the driver's side o-ring on the camshaft end cap on my W211 E-350. Everyone said to replace it, but the Mystery Oil solved the problem for good.

The MMO is proven safe and will never harm your engine. You can go up to 1.5 quarts with an eight quart capacity crankcase. In case your wondering, it's a 60/40 mix of automatic transmission fluid and light solvent, which many seasoned mechanics swear by. It contains an extremely tough lubricating compound that increases shear strength and reduces wear. You could use it every oil change for the life of the car, just be sure to change the oil on time.

I just changed all of this with the following from FCP Euro. I had an oil smell and sure enough the breather assembly was leaking oil.

I also replaced the 3 caps. All in all it was a super easy job to do and it was about $100. Now no oil smell nor is anything leaking!

My 3 caps were brittle with age from the heat. So I am glad those were changed as well. Just take a flat head screw driver and pop it off, then snap the new ones on.
