is it worth the noise

My 240 E-class will enter production in April, delivery in May. This is my first Mercedes, and going through this forum, I found something which makes me think if really I should get an E-class (I can call the sale off before it enters in production). I need your feelings on this.

Dealer gave me an E-240 for a couple of days (test drive), and I loved it. BUT I could not stop hearing this noise that some of you reported about the rumbling noise coming from the new brake system (actually I found the posts after the test drive, so I was not looking for the noise during the ride).

Ok, I know that this sound is normal for the e-class and I don't really want to get in the sound issue itself. My concern goes on to weather it is worth for you, experience e-class users, to buy such an expensive car with a rumbling noise, which actually annoys very much (according to previous post in the forum).

Would you have bought the e-class if you really knew about this problem?
Do tend to forget about the noise after sometime?.

I am somehow picky about noises, and I am not sure if I will get over this one, so I am thinking on taking the down-payment back and go for the 5 series, which I don't like the interior, but have not reported any unusual noise problem.

I just want to hear from you guys if it is worth it to go after all for the E-class.

Now your aware of the problem that SOME members are having, I would recommend you go back to the dealer (do not mention your concerns) and have a test drive in the same engine sized model.

I have an E320CI and you CANNOT hear any noise from inside the vehicle. When you are outside then it just sounds like the car has a slight upset stomach

I appreciate that some members are definitely having problems and it is one that must be resolved.

Regards,
John

I say it depends on your driving conditions. I find the "rumbling" sound my car makes is very loud and annoying when I am creeping along in traffic for about 1 1/2 hours a day. The system resets itself many times during my commute. The noise and vibration is not all that noticable when I am driving at highway speed, which is unfortunately not for very long or often.

I've had two E-500's and haven't noticed the noise at all inside the car after initial start up. Maybe I'm lucky but it doesn't seem to cycle loud enough for me to hear when I'm driving at speed or in stop and go traffic. The cycling at start up is usually over by the time I've backed out of my drive way.

I think you'd be making a BIG mistake to take your deposit back and get a Bmm'r.

Thanks for the info.

By your comments, it seems that my car may not have this noise problem, but once again I may not find out until I get the car.

For the moment I think I´ll go for the Mercedes, unless I really get some negative comment about this noise experience.

Lets see in may.

I can't wait to have it.

Hi Gang:

It's a new sound to be sure - but one that I have accepted as part of the cars technology - AND one that I might attribute to two Emergency/Panic stops in the past year. In both cases, the new breaking system stopped with incredible tenacity. SBC works and very well at that.

Brake Noise

I have heard this noise a few times when there is no other distracting noise like the stereo or phone or other cars or the wind.

I actually find it intriguing as the rumble indicates the charging of the system. I have experianced two very hard emergancy stops and was amazed at how well these "Brake by Wire" SBC brakes work. I will gladly accept the small noise for this pervfomance. I cannot imagine how people can expect all such systems to work totally silently. Maybe theirs is a lot louder than mine.....

I partly agree with you that small noise for better response may be worth it, but why did Mercedes not put the efforts to eliminate this noise? I actually expect Mercedes to do it.

It will be for example if Mercedes tells you that in order to have better handling, they have to harden the shock system, and so you get a bumpy ride.
It is good to have more handling, but if the car ride is not as comfortable, I may be considering another car.

This is a very delicate issue, as it depends on one's opinion about what should be a good car, but just wanted to bring this issue for discussion.

Actually now I own 1999 Sebring LXI coupe, and the comfort ride is good, but there is a lot of road noise, which makes the long rides very annoying (cannot maintain a decent conversation at highway speeds). This is maybe why I am so picky about noises. If I buy this Mercedes I expect it to be very silent in every way (which it is, except for the brake sound).

Thanks for your input anyway.

Of course it's NOT worth it if you pay that much to buy a MB like me.
I hate that SBC noise and hope I can get rid of it if possible.

B.Rgds.,
Steven

Hi Steve,
What is your dealer doing to rectify the problem?

Vehicles that are making this 'hateful' noise seem to be a very small percentage, so surely it must be a problem with the individual vehicle.

John

It seems that there are different levels of SBC noise and they affect people in different degrees of annoinance. My car only makes the groaning sound for a second or two when I open the driver's door after the car has been sitting for a while. It also will make a little sound after shutoff. I only hear the noise while outside the car or while the door is open. I have never noticed the sound or any vibration while driving.

The SBC brake-by-wire is very reassuring in its actions. My wife and I consider the braking to be much more responsive and sure feeling than on our previous W202. One interesting note was when I got into the car to let it roll back in our driveway without starting the engine. I had full brake action with the engine off. Other vacuum brake-assist systems would not have had enough residual vacuum to be able to stop the car like the SBC system.

Hi Jim
Totally agree with EVERY word you have said. It must be extremely frustrating though for those who are not as fortunate.
