subwoofer upgrades

I'm starting to get into designing a (very) shallow sub replacement for vehicles with rear deck subs that won't lose trunk height.

So, what is everybody replacing their subs with now? How do you think it sounds? Would you prefer the ability to use the stock amplifier or did you upgrade the amp too?

What sub specifically? What do you like or not like about what you put in?
