Smoke coming out of passenger side hood

I have an 06 e350 with over 200k on it and recently I've noticed smoke/steam coming from the passenger side of the hood. Its not severe and I only notice it when I'm idling. I also have a check coolant notice intermittently, not sure if it is related to that. My car also has codes p0410 and p2006 for secondary air injection and intake manifold, could it be related to that? Don't really notice anything wrong when I drive it, maybe a slight rough idle sometimes which I think the intake manifold is the issue. Thanks for any help.

I know this sounds snarky, but the first step would be to open the hood...

Do it when it's dark and use a flashlight and you'll get closer to where the source is.

Google is your friend on learning what the codes are trying to tell you. Maybe you just have a loose or cracked air line, and a close inspection will reveal it.

It could be a coolant leak or an oil leak which drips on the exhaust manifold.

I did open the hood but I could not find the source of the smoke.. I'm thinking it could be a leak somewhere, but I can't quite tell.

Can you pull the underbody panels and look for the puddles or signs that would appear if a leak is present?

If smoke is electrical the circuit will stop working when all the smoke has leaked out.

OP if you are not up to the task get the car to a competent mechanic to be looked at.

Be sure that all fluids are full.

I did top off the coolant with distilled water and noticed it was about a liter short so maybe could be a coolant leak somewhere? I'm not very mechanically inclined so I think I'll just have to take it to my mechanic. Thanks all.

I had smoke from an alternator that died. Special kind of smell.

Get it to the mechanic right away!

Here's a ol' skool trick...Take a piece of cardboard, and lay under the vehicle, Then let the car run for roughly 5 10 minutes, next you'll be able to view the liquids on the cardboard. Finally take a picture and post some we could possibly help determine type.

If it is a coolant leak it will smell sweet. If oil leak it smells burnt.

Ok I laid the cardboard box underneath the vehicle and there isn't any kind of fluid leaking. But upon popping the hood i notice there definitely is smoke coming out from the space underneath the cabin air filter housing and the engine. Can't really pinpoint where though. I haven't noticed this before but there also is a high pitched sound coming from the secondary air pump apparently? I have the fault code p0410 so I think it is related to that. Weird thing is I already replaced the secondary air pump about 6 months ago... only to fail in about 3 months.

I know this may be a silly question, but did you remove the plastic panels under the car before looking for the leak with the cardboard?

Did you check the oil centrifuge? I think that's in the back of the engine. I think if you took it to an MB dealer they'd know the usual places to look for a leak. Otherwise take it to the mechanic.

Lol no I didn't open the plastic panels before checking the leak. Silly me. I don't feel comfortable jacking up my car and getting under it so I think I'll just leave this one for the mechanic. Anyone have any ideas about the high pitched squeal coming from the secondary air pump? I want to check the fuse and relay for it but I have no idea where it's located.
