post 24... What happens if the car is moving when you drop it into gear when it is cold? Start the car in neutral, let it start rolling downhill, then put it in gear.

correct me if i'm wrong, but does the instrument cluster gear select read N when you put it in to Drive for the first time? Can't see it clearly but if that is true, i'd be chasing a shifter.....

No, I have changed it to try to restart then I engaged D and it was the same again.
as I have checked it says correctly every time the gears.

Search 722.6 cold stall issue. Could be your problem.
Simply put, it's the torque converter not slipping when first cold, they stick, and cause the transmission to stall the engine when first put in gear. Normally goes away once warmed up.

Hi Guys, I am new to this. I am having the same problem with my E250 2010, it is called (cold stall) which is simply you go in the car and starts perfect, as soon as you put on D or R starts shaking and cuts out. However, if sit in the car for a few minutes to heat up and the put it in gear will be fine and day no matter how many times you stop and start. It does it only when its cold!!!!. I took the car to someone I know works in a German cars garage and he said it is the high pressure fuel pump which cost a lot of money because a big job. Now I took to another garage and he recons its to do with gear box!!! simply it needs serviced. So I am waiting for him to do it either this week or early next week and I will let you know as soon as I get it done.
Cheers

Car shuts down when gear engaged
Thanks for the quick reply. My mechanic said the same thing, just live with it, but it is annoying. I always thought it is to do with the torque converter. However, I am going to let him do the gear service, it might help. But you mentioned changed the oil! do you mean engine oil or the gear box oil (fluid)? I just did an engine oil change and fuel filter too just in case.
Thanks again

That's good to hear !! I was told that it's a sticking valve in the transmission & the cure is to service the auto gearbox, change the transmission fluid + filter. Apparently you need to run the vehicle for a few hundred miles and then the issue will disappear !! I've just changed the filter and fluid last week, all I can do is wait to see what happens Will let you now what happens after a few miles
