Acquired '05 E320 CDI

Well, I just got an '05 E320 Diesel from my dad (long story, basically he had it and never drives it and he's getting old, had to get rid of the extra car, etc).

I paid him $1500 Canadian, and it's got 248,000 kilometers on it.

Body is great, no rust, interior is clean, no tears in leather, etc. Has the extended glass roof, MB navigation. The only thing it doesn't have is xenon .

He was the 2nd owner, and the car came with all the maintenance records from the first owner since new.

The car needs a new EGR and transmission back plate, for which I got a quote from a local MB indie shop for $1600 Canadian dollars total, installed.

Basically my question is this: Is this a good car to own? What can I expect? I already have a very low mileage Volvo S80 V8 which I absolutely love, but my thoughts were to drive both over the course of the summer and possible sell one, or if my wife likes the Benz she can use it.

Thanks for your time, I actually do love this car (from the brief experience I have driving it over the last week).

Lovely car and I bet you will love the 40 mpg.
The only think I would add is wood steering wheel.
For EGR check forum on cleaning procedure.
What is transmission back plate?
Enjoy new drive

Transmission back plate - I'm not quite sure I think it has to do with heat transfer, all I know is that the tranny was holding lower gears sometimes for too long, the MB Star Diagnostic computer pointed to the transmission back plate...

Also, are these older CDI cars worse than the newer Bluetec cars? As I understand it, these CDI cars are straight 6's with 1 turbo, and the Bluetec cars are a V6 diesel? Do they have 1 turbo or 2?

You can do the conductor plate yourself, there's plenty of diys around, or a local mb shop that wont charge you as much.
It's called panoramic sunroof, just so you know.

For the xenon your best bet is this > Updated facelift headlights plus xenonx conversion.
And you can sell yours or save em in case.

read carefully the description, this headlights are for the halogen model with xenon upgrade.

You have 5-sp 722.6 transmission that require replacing orings on wet plug.
The part is officially called pilot bushing, but goes with several nick names.
When $10 part is not replaced for long time, ATF wets the electronic connectors and dirt is shortening the circuits, giving all kind of conductor plate errors, or speed sensor errors.
So don't replace conductor plate yet.
Do the ATF flush and pilot bushing replacement, clear codes and see if they come back.
The I6 v/s V6 will open whole new dispute, so don't go there.
I am excited with new I4 Bluetec .
All MB diesels are top of the line engines and main difference is that new technology, when delivers more HP and more mpg - gets you on maintenance and repairs cost.

Update

Well, here's an update of my brief ownership of this land yacht

I FINALLY got this car out of the mechanic's shop last week, washed it quickly and took it for a 500km round trip to the cottage for the weekend. I averaged 6.1L/100km consumption with some stop and go traffic at times, some highway cruising at 130 to 140 km/h, and some slow and fast cruising around the cottage showing friends, etc, the torque of the engine. I acknowledge that I read these values from the information display and it might not be quite right, but it's much better than I'm used to nonetheless.

All in all, I'm into this car for $3900 CDN, $1500 to buy it (which I know was low due to some special circumstances with the previous owner I know), and another $2400 to fix it up at the mechanic.

The $2400 CDN at the mechanic went to the following:
-transmission conductor plate replacement, and fluid flush, refill, fix fluid leak at o ring, etc.
-EGR valve replacement
-3rd brake light replacement (old one was cracked and had water in it)
-tracing and fixing ground fault in trunk wiring (trunk latch and emergency trunk release had no power)
-engine air filter
-cabin air filter
-synthetic oil and filter change

Also my mechanic showed me evidence of the "CDI black death" repair from the when the previous owner had the car. The injector closest to the front of the vehicle had a bunch of black carbon around it (noticed with engine cover off) and he said that it was fixed. Actually, he knows the previous shop owner where it was repaired in October and he confirmed that they did in fact fix it.

All in all I love this car and cannot see selling it any time soon. It is at my detail shop now and I will post pics once I pick it up.

Here is a pic from tonight when I dropped it off there.

Mercedes is coming out with a new I4, nice. Yeah v6 vs I6 personal choice both good. I know Mercedes wants to bring back the I6. The plate takes a solid day if you are just following youtube tutorials. The pilot o-ring takes all of 10 minutes, really easy. I changed out my fluid in my 722.6 made a world of difference.

Glad to hear that you are enjoying the CDI.

I recently purchased an '06 and I've been really impressed driving it. Great car! I have a couple of issues but, I'll get them resolved in the near future.

I bought an '06 E320CDI back in November with 80,000 miles on it. Unfortunately haven't had a chance to drive it much, but my MIL has one with 120,000 miles on it and hasn't much of any issues with it. It's the last I6 diesel made for North America and seems to be pretty bullet proof. This is about my 4th diesel and I've liked them all.

Beautiful car! Looks very clean! A friend of mine back in 2006 Bought one brand new. I drove it a couple times and loved it. Spacious, comfortable, great ride, 40+MPG and lots of torque. You can get a tune for it as well and they move great for a Diesel car.

Its a sweet ride. Lots of torque, great mileage and reliability. I drive one with over 300.000 miles, and just changed the TCM. It drives sweet, and I put in a Carlsson Cd32 chip in it from Germany.

0-100 km in 6.3 sec now. I drive without the Top air filter box, so the turbo can suck in more air. Nice Pano roof.

I think what Kaj is saying is that if you took the top off the air filter box then you're feeding engine compartment (read: hot) air into the turbo. Instead of the colder (read: denser) air from the front of the car. You're also losing any ram air effect you may take advantage of from the car moving forward. In other words, taking off the top of the air filter box isn't doing anything good for you.

The cold front air will travel to the air filter box, witch is above the turbo. So I think its neglectible. The sheer volume with my turbo can suck in air faces now is in my experience giving me more boost then with the airbox filter on it.

The V6 om642 has the turbo inside 2 cilinder banks. So if it was really important to get in colder air then why did MB engineers they place it there ?

Factory spec CD32 Carlsson box claims 6,9 sec from 0-100 on the W211 sedan

I clocked it on 6.143 Sec on my config without the airbox closed.

Theory is Theory, but I believe in practical proof and benchmarking figures confirmed by myself.

U guys should try it, and u will see. faster responsiveness, less turbo spin for same amount of air to come in will result in speed and acceleration improvements.

Why don't you reinstall factory air inlet and take it to the track again?
Don't think the difference will be big enough to make solid statement, but assuming you had 3 runs with hot air, comparing to 3 runs on cold air should tell something?
To what it is worth - the 603 engine with no intercooler pumps 140 hp from 3l engine.
The same 3l in intercooled 606 engine pump 174 hp.
Obviously 606 engine has more updates than intercooler alone, but gives you perspective.

Thats a fair statement. But I've measured it on a long strip from traffic lights. Its locally known as the fire strip. if I had the time I would definitely would do it, but the cold air is still being sucked in mixed with hotter air from the engine compartment. Ive also removed the plastic deck beneath the transmission so the airflow is noticeable. ITs also good for the transmission to cool better, often stuck in traffic jams on 30 degrees Celsius days for hours to my work or back from it.

Anyways it performs well enough that I will keep it this way. and I always can take a look at the internals of the om 648 inline 6.
