Update: Decided to bring the car to Mercedes and have it done. Something like $60 for parts, and $350 or so for labor. They did a sunroof campaign check and a regular fluids check and service. The service manager used his computer and said there was never a recall for our car based on the VIN. Its a 2004 E500 4Matic 4Dr Sedan. We bought the car brand new, and I have a 1" thick folder of service records from the original dealer, a secondary dealer (out of state) when the original went out of business, a local Mercedes-Trained Independent shop, and more recently the new local dealership that opened 2 years ago. No letters from Mercedes on the gas tank or smell.
So can I present the local Mercedes Dealership bill to Mercedes USA for reimbursement since the dealer told me there never was a recall? Whenever we got a Mercedes letter to fix something we brought the car in even if it meant going out of state to the closest dealer (an hour away). Will they give me crap about it being past the window of opportunity if they failed to notify me?

2003-2009 non PZEV gasoline w211 tank assembly is covered by extended warranty to 15 years/unlimited mileage - 2004 e500 4matic mileage warranty has expired. “We bought the car brand new, and I have a 1" thick folder of service records from the original dealer, a secondary dealer (out of state) when the original went out of business, a local Mercedes-Trained Independent shop, and more recently the new local dealership that opened 2 years ago.” You can argue you were never notified by supporting claim with attachment but be prepared to answer if you ever complained about odor before warranty expiration.
