emissions warranty

I have a 2007 E 350 and live in CA and bought the car in CA. My check engine light came on the very next day, after having it serviced. I had to renew my tags today so I took my car to the mechanic to see what needed to be done to fix the problem and then go have it smogged. Long story short, I was told that I needed a new Secondary air Intake pump in order for it to pass the smog test and for the check engiine light to be turned off. To my understanding, this is part of the emissouns conrtol system and Mercedes will cover the repairs under their warranty as long as my car is 15 years old or under and it has no more than 150,000 miles. Does anyone know if this is certain?

Check your warranty booklet. Many items are covered under the 15/150k warranty if your car is a Pzev. Not all cars were Pzev. You'd have to run your car though a vin decoder to see if you have option code 917 which is the Pzev option.

Thank you very much! I am from NJ but for the past 3 years I started to spend 6 months here in CA and the other back there. I bought this car out here and I take it to a Mercedes mechanic that has been in business here over 40 years and has a good reputation. I never knew about this PZEV warranty and he never told me. I came across this information while reading the owner’s manual yesterday. Last August I had the Intake Manifold replaced and that is also on the covered parts list! I could have had that work done under the warranty as well!

You're entitled to MB reimbursement, see page 45.

Why didn't the seller smog the car? In CA it's the seller's responsibility to have a current smog (within 90 days) when selling a car.

Strigoi,

I have owned this car since 2014. The good news is that I took it to a MBZ Dealer today and they are taking care of everything for me. I have an appointment to drop it off next Tuesday and they are giving me a loaner and they are even going to get me reimbursed for the Intake Manifold that I had replaced last August. So everything worked out good.

Emissions Issues Resolved

Thank you to everyone who replied with very helpful information. I was able to get my issues resolved by a dealer and the car will be fixed next week and all repairs and past repairs will be covered by the PZEV warranty

jandolini 11-08-2017 05:32 PM

Hello Everyone;

So the MBZ Dealer called me today and told me that my car was ready. The part was covered under the warranty. He also told me that I would have to start a claim with Mercedes, in order to get reimbursed for the intake manifold that I replaced last year. I called MBZ and they said they would not reimburse me because the work was done at an independant repair shop and not an authorized dealer. I told them, according to their Owner's Manual, it says repairs can be done by a qualified mechanic as long as genuine Mercedes parts are used and in an emergency. My car broke down on me and had to be towed into the shop and Original parts were used to replace the intake manifold. Does anyone have any advice?

I read it as you had just bought the car, not that it was just up for smog.

i apologize for not making it more clear. I was trying to say that I bought the car when I decided to live here in CA part time, so I would havea car to drive while I am here. I have had it since December of 2014.

Let us know how it all ended?
There is no law in CA that require seller to provide smog certificate. It is common advise.

That is incorrect. It is the seller's responsibility to smog the vehicle.

When a vehicle is more than four model years old, a seller must provide evidence of a current smog certification except when one of the following occurs:
  • The transfer occurs between a spouse, domestic partner, sibling, child, parent, grandparent, or grandchild.
  • A biennial smog certification was submitted to DMV within 90 days prior to the vehicle transfer date (a vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification).

When a car is sold, who is responsible for the inspection? The seller is required to provide the buyer with a valid smog inspection certification at the time of the sale or transfer. Smog certifications are good for 90 days from the date of issuance.

The inspection is not required on a transfer if a biennial smog certification was submitted to DMV within 90 days prior to the vehicle transfer date (a vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification).

NOTE: Smog certifications are not required for transfers that occur for a gasoline powered motor vehicle that is four or less model years old. (Determine the oldest-qualifying year model by subtracting three from the current year) the four or less model years old rule does not apply to diesel powered vehicles. A smog transfer fee will be collected from the new owner.

Emissions Warranty for PZEV vehicles in CA

Hello everyone!

It's been a while since I have been on here. A lot going on. Anyway, Back in November, the 12th to be exact, I took my car into a local MBZ dealer. Turned out that everything was covered by the 15/150,000 emissions warranty. The next day when i went to pick up my car, I showed my service manager my receipes for previous work that was done by and independant Mercedes mechanic. I also showed him the handbook where it clearly states that the repairs are still covered under the warranty, even if the repairs were done by an independant mechanic, in case of an emergency. My car was towed into the place and the repairs were done using Mercedes parts. For the past almost 3 months, I have been calling MBZ in NJ only to get the run around. I finally sent an email to the V.P. and Pres of MBZ, in Atlanta. Two days later, which was last week, I received an email from the Case Manager, who had originally told me he was not involved with this whatsoever and that it was between the warranty department and the dealer, that checked my car out to verify that there were infact MBZ parts. This Case Manager tells me that there is no way they can tell that the repairs that were done, were actually the repairs that are covered under the emissions warranty. I paid 1600.00 and gave all the receipts to them. He did say, they were willing to give me an 800.00 credit towards future repairs. I went to the dealer this past Friday and asked what they put in the report that was sent to MBZ in NJ and the I was told that nothing negative was sent to them and what was sent, were copies of my repairs and a check request. So this idiot who never once returned my calls and lied to me when I did get him once, when I called, took it upon himself to make a decison. I am so disgusted with MBZ and there Customer Service. Where is the Integrity of MBZ???? I was planning on purchasing a new MBZ in April, but now I am looking at the BMW 7 series. It's unfortunate how one rotten apple can spoil one's opinion of an entire corporation. l

Did you call MB USA headquarters?

Emissions Warranty for PZEV vehicles in CA

Yes! I was dealing with their Customer Service in the old corporate office in NJ. MBZ moved their corporate offices to Atlanta last year but the Customer Service is still in NJ. I am trying to get the direct number for the Atlanta corporate office but I have had no luck whatsoever. I even asked the dealer for it and they don't have it. Everyone I spoke to, just gave me the Customer Care number which is the number for the NJ location. I am not giving up and throwing in the towel yet. I am going to keep going until they do the right thing, according to their handbook and owner's manual. Thank you for the reply!
