The Ultimate Goal: A Mean (but Classy) Exhaust Note
Hey Car Guys,
I like making goals. The ultimate goal with this car (e550 4matic) is to make the exhaust note sound amazing- it's my favorite part of any car.
It already sounds great, but it would really get me going to make it sounds like this:
I know it's blasphemous to post an Audi in admiration on this website, but I've seen those RS7's riding through town and they really have the perfect purr to stay classy and turn heads at the same time... I don't want a fire breathing dragon- I'm in commercial real estate and still need to be able to schmooze clients from the cabin while driving to retail space all over town.
Being young in the business I do have a budget, but was thinking there may be a way to improve the note in stages- building up to the ultimate goal. Anybody already create this plan and have parts/brands/pricing?
I saw somebody install an electric sound damper that can open/close the pipes when you demand sound, or don't... I saw this on my uncle's '08 Porsche RS60 Spyder and thought that was a pretty clever feature...
Lastly, I'm looking for a solution that will only make the E550 more efficient. I'd rather sustain longevity than turn heads, but I'm hoping there are solutions to do both!
Thanks for any help here.

Cole

Eurocharged mid-length headers for my E500 were $529 plus another $550 for installation by a European specialist mechanic. Welding in of the header downpipes was another $150. Bought an x-pipe from eBay for $30 and paid another $140 to the muffler shop to cut out my resonator and install. I had my ECU tuned by Eurocharged during one of their specials - think it was $229 or somewhere close to that. My airbox was modified by Speed43 ($275) and I'm running Green filters ($75). Purchased used AMG E55 exhausts from Craigslist for $400 and paid $275 for the muffler shop to put them in and do the bumper cutouts. To help with throttle lag I installed a Sprint Booster device ($245). For an E500 she really gets up and moves. The car sounds awesome - quiet at idle and cruising, but a low throaty growl when stomping on the gas.

Dollar for dollar, the Sprint Booster may be my single favorite mod so far. Reduces throttle lag by about 90% depending upon what setting you have it on. Do a Google search and you'll find lots of glowing reviews of the product. You'll also read some people bashing it, most of whom haven't tried the device. It also works well in complementing all the other mods. A simple ECU tune won't accomplish what the Sprint Booster does, nor will mashing the accelerator pedal harder and faster. Every now and then just for fun I'll turn it off for a few minutes while driving. Within a few city blocks I have to turn it back on as the throttle lag is that noticeable and annoying. The difference is night and day.

One thing I forgot to mention is I had the headers ceramic coated at a local shop for $225. Prevents discoloration of the steel over time while also reducing underhood temps. In my mind money well spent.
