2003 E320 - Red VISIT WORKSHOP warning with battery symbol
This came on today, on the way home from work.
I cannot tell any lack of performance or start up issues, everything is working as it should.
Any ideas as to where to troubleshoot? And no, I do not have a scanner.
Thanks very much in advance.

Auxiliary battery is bad. On my cdi if it sits for more than two days when I first start it I get the same message. I can let the car run for five minutes, shut it off, then restart and the warning is gone. I think the battery is approximately 5 tears old. I just have to get around to order a new one. This is what I have in it now and will probably order another in a couple of days:

Why does this message/malfunction only pop up every other day? It seems to clear itself, one day no malfunction and it comes on again the next day, just to reset itself again after a while?????

I say it is the condition of the battery. If yours is over 5 years old, I would replace it. If it is less than five years old, you can have it tested. Again, my cdi has to sit for at least three days before I get that message. The first time it happened I was able to shut off the car and restart it immediately and the message cleared. The second time the message would not clear immediately, I had to let the car run for five minutes, then shut down and restart. During this time, everything seemed to be working normally, at least the AC was blowing cold air.
My battery is five years old and they do not like heat from the engine compartment. My replacement battery should come in today or tomorrow, then one day to charge it on my motorcycle charger, then I will install it, most likely on Saturday.

Hi, I am having the exact same issue with my car. The Aux battery has a date of 09/14 and is not charging (when my mechanic tested it with his meter).
Like S70Houston, I am getting the red battery warning intermittently with no apparent loss of performance. I'll wait for mtrevelino to change the Aux battery and then decide. Btw, how much does Aux battery cost in US?
I am a bit skeptical in throwing money at the battery as I fear that it could be alternator or voltage regulator. My main battery is 3 years old and gives a steady 12.3 volt in display at idle and underload stays at 14.0 - 14.2 (with AC, stereo and headlights).
I thought I'll share the info if that is of any help.

Battery is definitely older than 5 years, and we had over 100 degrees here every day for a week.

Got a new battery and installed it today. So far no maleaction on the dash, but too early to tell.
Followed the procedure by disconnecting the Negative on the Main Battery in the trunk, did then remove the Small Aux. Battery under the hood. All was easy peasy.
However, after hooking everything back up and getting the main battery connected again, I get he malfunction Notice " ESP not available. See Owners manual". Strange, had no clue as to what exactly to do or check. Also the sunroof functions had to eliminate themselves as well as the auto window up feature on the driver and passenger window. Had to reset the sunroof, and it worked again. After a while, the auto features up on the side windows worked and the ESP Malfunction went away itself.
QUESTION: Is this normal? Does the computer reset itself after a while and it clears itself from these issues? CONFUSED

I believe that the ESP will clear by itself if you turn the steering wheel side to side a couple of times and cycle the ignition. I changed my aux battery on Thursday, along with the air filter, cabin filter, and fuel filter, and did not disconnect the main battery. As long as you are careful with the wire terminals, there should not be any problems. The hardest part was getting each battery bolt to connect to the nut. I noticed on the old battery I had a piece of cardboard under each nut. This time I used a small screw driver to help hold up the nut while I attached the bolt.
I have the old aux battery sitting on my work bench. I just put a volt meter to it and it was at 11.2 volts. I think when I took it out it was at 11.7 volts. I assume a good battery should be at least 12.3 volts without the car running.
One other thing I noticed with the AC Delco battery is when I filled the battery with acid, the top of the plates were not covered. I do not know if this has something to do with the agm type battery.
Final note about your signature. I had a 2000 BMW LT (totaled at 99,960 miles), and now have a 2008 BMW R1200RT.

Thanks Mike.
My battery measured 9 Volts after I removed it from the car. No problem at all connecting my bolts with the new battery (mine is a Duralast), bolts were long enough.
Sweet on the '08 RT bike.
My previous bikes:
- 2002 R1150RT
- 2005 R1200RT

After changing my Aux. Battery on Saturday, I have no longer received the malfunction message on the instrument cluster. Seems like all is good.
Thanks for the advice, helped saving me some bucks and time, not having to take the car in.

My old battery sitting on the bench for the past 5 days is down to a 10.8 volts. I assume this is why I would only receive the red message after the car sat for at least three days. If I ran the car every day or other day, there was not enough time for the battery to drain. Glad that yours is working ok. Our cars are sensitive to battery voltages!
