Battery disconnected for ages, now sparks and burning smell
Hi, I have a 2005 W211 E350 7G which has been sitting off the road for about a year due to an alternator problem (quick discharge and "convenience functions inactive" warning), so the battery was disconnected (rear trunk one only) but after reconnecting it recently, there was a spark and noise from the passenger area and then a strong smell from around there, and no power to the car.
Any thoughts on what it might be, or where to start looking?

Reversed cables, battery in wrong way!
Thanks for the replies. looks like I have put the battery in the wrong way round when reconnecting it! D'oh!
Any ideas on the kinds of things that could have happened? ECU fried?

Just took the car to garage, for those with similar issues. The car was sitting for about a year, it had the rear battery disconnected and removed and on reconnecting, it went in the wrong way round, backwards. The result is that both batteries have died, the Alternator is completely dead, the ESP module is dead and the SBC brake unit has also stopped working.
Car in for expensive repair.
Lesson is, don't leave the W211 without battery power long term, and don't connect it wrongly!!

I'd lean more towards "don't connect it wrongly!!".
Once you get the car running, you might see if the extended SBC warranty will take care of the SBC problem. Of course, I'd not necessarily volunteer information that was not asked for.
