I purchased a C4 following the recommendation from the support team. I'm very happy with the purchase, unit has worked great without issue since purchasing about 3 months ago. I specifically purchased PP03 kit. They will also provide online SCN coding for $89 per coding. It was about $800 delivered and took about a week to get.

If it's not for DIY but for customers, online SCN coding will become an issue. Latest version Xentry Diagnosis OpenShell(XDOS) can support all models but it works only with online SCN coding. Older version Xentry/DAS can do offline SCN coding but it can't support newer vehicles. If you don't have official SCN account in MB mainframe in Germany, you may need both versions of Xentry. Or, rent an account monthly from someone.

You can install the latest Xentry on any computer running Windows 10/7, either 32bits or 64bits. I could install it even on a Macbook with VirtualBox and Windows 10. So, I recommend to buy a good C5 clone and install the software yourself on your laptop.

The other option is using a Pass Through device (SAE J2534) instead of the C5. It's a kind of USB to OBDII converter. It supports only after 2004(+/-) models though.

What is the limiting factor on whether the vehicle 2004 (+/-) is supported by J2534? Is it K-Line?

The unit I purchased, as well as many of those offered, have developer mode enabled along with Vediamo and Monaco. Changing programming such as options, offline updates, option coding and other parameters is possible. For example - I have re-coded the sunroof to improve the closing function, set the trans adaptations, re-coded blower motor speed and adapted the auto wiper system to a new windshield ('14 GL450). I also was able to update the Tele-Aid system to function again. The place I bought from offers SCN coding via team-viewer for $89 USD. Some other places, such as xcar360.com, offer it for $50. MHH Auto forums has a number of members that offer it. If you're adventurous - Vediamo and / or Monaco systems can perform the coding without SCN online via MB. You need CBF or CFF files which come with systems such as the one I bought.

Does anyone here have knowledge of the C5 clones?
There are two sellers i found that claim to have 1:1 C5 clones that have Doip protocol and not just a C4 in a C5 case.
They claim to have Doip and an internal hard drive just like the real mcoy.

OBDii365...com item #SP311
MBStarTool...com item #PP11

So are the sellers lying there asses off? Do C5 1:1 clones exist?

would i have to pay for a yearly subscription for this kind of C5?

TIA

I just need to do some version coding on my 2005 E320, and I already have a J3534 pass thru device. What software would I need to do this? I have always thought the only way I could do this was with the actual STAR Xentry/DAS kit with the laptop and the C4 or C5 unit, but if I could just download some software and use the cable I already have that would be a game changer!

You want to get in contact with Peter. https://mbworld.org/forums/members/372055-pmercury.html

As my experience (#2 above) started to go south with connectivity issues, etc. Peter was able to save me the expense of hardware and deliver top notch software.

Rule 1 Do not buy anything else than a C4 or C4 Plus (choice of the quality chips is very important) (C5 and later are or fake bad clones, or you will get the device Blocked and bricked soon or later)
Rule 2 Do not use anything else than 2019 updated Windows 7 enterprise N
Rule 3 Do not use one Windows system for something else than Xentry and EWA (you can create multiboot)
Rule 4 Keep in mind that You can only do Online SCN with latest version and you will have a problem finding someone doing this with those Chinese crap installs ast they are full of trojans. (revealed end 2019)
Rule 5 You might be able to do offline coding with old versions but very limited in terms updated firmwares
Rule 6 Why would you want to use Passthru with all the limits and problems ?

All will end up in the wall with Chinese manipulate software setups whatever you do, and why would you want to feed China even more anyway

I want to share my experience in dealing with Peter as well. He is a fantastic guy — a very knowledgeable, open and absolutely honest Mercedes enthusiast. I, too, had read a lot of threads and was looking for help with Xentry purchase. Glad I made the right choice. From the very beginning, Peter had given me valuable advice that helped to put the hardware system together. His installation took a few hours, and everything is running flawlessly since then. I also want to say that Peter helped me disinterestedly with some very complicated mods. Even when we had difficulties, and others had told that's impossible, he was in touch and was spending a lot of time to find a way to solve the puzzle and find a correct solution. I highly recommend pmercury. Thank you very much, Peter, for all your help!

That's what I like the most, when others say "it's impossible"
