W211 Left Mirror Repair
I noticed the other day the up/down adjustment stopped working on my left side mirror. This meant that it didn't tilt down anymore when I was reverse parking and it's a feature I love because I can make sure I don't bash my rim into the gutter!
The left/right adjustment still worked fine it was just the up/down. I guessed it would probably be the mirror motor so I pulled it apart and tried Googling part numbers, however there was nothing available locally. Mercedes wanted something stupid like $500 just for the motor assembly!! For the meantime I swapped the up/down motor with the left/right motor so the reverse tilt works.
Here are a few pics of the mirror internals. I measured the voltage on the terminals and as you can see it's just a 12V motor and the polarity is reversed to make it go the other way.
Mirror with glass removed showing motor assembly.
One of the two motors inside the motor housing assembly. They are both the same in the left mirror. Motors are made by Johnson but I couldn't find anything online with this part number.
Multimeter hooked up to left mirror to check voltage driving the motor assembly.
12V driving the motor assembly
12V reversed to drive it the opposite way
Motor assembly removed from left mirror. This part is $500 from Mercedes in Australia! Many like this online but they are all slightly different. Unless the yellow part number is an exact match, it's different in some way.
Motor assembly pulled apart and two motors removed. In my case one motor is faulty and has stopped working.
Just by chance I looked at aliexpress.com and found a little motor that has the EXACT measurements of the factory mirror motors. I just searched for "Mercedes mirror motor" and it popped up for $4US!
So I've ordered two and will post an update when they arrive - fingers crossed they fit and fix the problem!

So 3 months later the mirror motors arrived!! Long story short, they sent the wrong ones, then I had to wait for them to re-send the correct ones because it was Chinese new year and they were on holidays....I'd given up hope but then the other day a small package arrived in the mail and lo and behold......
The replacement motors were exactly the same size as the factory ones. I pulled the worm drive off the factory motor and pressed it onto the replacement motor and clicked it into the motor housing. It works fine, the only difference is that it's noisier than the factory motor.
I'm happy, mirror fixed for a couple of dollars.
Here's a few pics.
The replacement motors.
Motor housing disassembled.
Chinese made motor next to factory Mercedes one.
New motor in housing. Fits perfectly.
