M112 Valve cover gaskets
2005 E320 (M112) has 95k and valve covers have been leaking for what looks to be a long time.
After reading it seems leaking valve cover gaskets ( & breather covers) are very common with the OEM valve cover gaskets. I've found, OEM, Elring ( which is supposidly OEM but not sure if there exactly the same?), Mahle, and Felpro. I really don't want to be dealing with this again in 80k miles so which one of these is the best? Thanks |
There is no best, they all leak eventually. 80,000 miles on a set of valve covers is wishful thinking. You'll be lucky to get 50 k.

Ok let me rephrase the question are the Elrings & the Felpros better, same, or worse than the MB originals as far as sealing and lasting?

On my 2005 E500 (M113) I went with genuine M.B. gaskets.
They are made by Bruss. I've read many posts about using aftermarket valve cover gaskets and they all leaked. Pay a little extra and get genuine. |
Get the original. I put on Elring and they started leaking within a week.

No sealant was used, mainly because I did not see any sealant from the factory when I opened up the covers. Having said that, next time I may use a little for the areas with sharp corners. Funny thing was that the Elring I was using looked identical to the original that was on the engine.
