On my '05 E320CDI, the left license plate light stopped working and I replaced the bulb but it still did not work. After removing the left inside trunk liner, I found the bundle of wires that go up to the trunk hinge at an acute angle and one wire broken. It looked like they had been dragging on the felt in the fender liner.

I spliced in a wire and then wrapped the bundle with a generic plastic wire coil and tie-wrapped it such that when the trunk closed, the wires took a gentle arc down to the wiring harness. I also covered the felt with some duct tape and secured that with some carefully applied little black tie wraps.

Hopefully this will help others that have to troubleshoot this mysterious failure.
