2004 E500 SBC replaced for free ! !
Got the dreaded no brakes red dash 97K miles while on the freeway. Was able to get to the side and stop. Happened couple more times so garaged it. Towed it to dealer but wasn't sure if they would honor the warranty which I only heard was lifetime, didn't actually follow up and find out. They called me back and said yes it was and cost to me was zero. Awesome!
|
That's good news, but it's not lifetime, it's 25 years so you probably have another 9-10 years worth of coverage. Originally it was just 10 years but they recently extended it to 25 years.

You must have been in traffic or already in the slow lane. I remember when I lost like 90% braking power and ended up in the middle of an intersection at a redlight. It was 4am so there were no other cars but yeah first thing I thought was I would be dead if this happened on the freeway. I guess all the complaints to the NHTSA served a purpose. Happy to hear you weren't hurt and managed to safely stop the car and that Mercedes is replacing it for free. good for them

They pretty much gave me a standard non-answer |
They have been really good as far as honoring the brake system warranties. I also had them replace entire fuel saddle tank and both modules 100% free of charge, they even detailed my car when I picked it up! Ordinarily approx. $6K service.
|
I really hope my norwegian work shop will offer me the same service if or when my SBC-unit fail.
|
My 2004 E-320 is getting the SBC replaced for free right now. I'm at 147K miles.
|
I forgot to have them do the fuel tank thing as mentioned above. That will be next.

You better hope it starts leaking soon since you have a 2004. There's a chance the warranty has already expired for you. |

I'm really hoping this is covered under warrenty in New Zealand as well not having the best of time atm trying to get covered under warrenty. How did you go?

So if I decided to call and set up a appt to have them replace the sbc unit BEFORE something goes array would they accept it? Or only when the braking system flashes the BIG red glowing notice, and scares the shi* out of me and family on a fall drive down/up Interstates of this great country would they fix it? Thoughts

Good luck with that, let us know how it goes. It's an extended warranty so it's cheaper to them to warranty it if it fails, it's not a recall so they don't need to replace it before it fails. But who knows, maybe if you're close enough in the count something might happen.

Had my SBC replaced at an indie and currently in the process of getting my $$ refunded through MB.

The warning light is set to go off after a certain number sbc pumps. I heard it was 100,000. So when the light goes on, doesnt necessarily mean it's bad, just means the set number of pumps was meet. With that said, I'd still get it replaced when the light goes off ;)

I have 164K miles, 06 E320 CDI, only got a white brake warning, brakes did not have any reduced braking, took it to a dealer they reset the counter, at 118K, everything is still good. So it seems people ignore the white warnings, until a red pops up and gives reduced braking.
|
I'm wondering if the red death notice sudden failure without warning is due to the counter being reset previously. My understanding is you get the White warning which gives you a set amount of applications before the red and you ignore it at your peril.
