Engine Noise 2007 E350 Sport
Hey I drive an 07 E w/ the sport package and i notice a clanking noise when i start the car. It is a low clank that appears to come from the driver side.. I dont know if it is normal. I knwo that i have heard it on another e350 like mine. Maybe both our cars are shot(LOL). Anyway, does anynoe else notice a minor clank in the engine which seems out of the ordinary?
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

It's a normal part of emmissions control, especially on late-model vehicles. It's caused by the ratio of air, oil and fuel flowing through the cylinders. Once the cylinders are warm, you shouldn't hear the knocking.

Not necessarily because this is my first car. Me being young and **** about the car, i hear everything. When I am at a stop sign or a red light, I hear the noise. The gentleman from the dealership turned on another e class like mine (same year and everything) and I heard the same noise. SO i hope it isnt anything severe

+1 I agree to that. The weather here has started to get cooler into low 50s and the car did started to make this ticking/chattering noise at start up. After 2mins as it warms up its goes away, so its normal.

Wow, I thought I'm the only that hearing this clanking sound at start up. I guess everyone has it on their car. You would think that MB with its class and technology will find a way to remedy this very annoying sound.

At least on my E550, the engine sounds like it has an afterburner when it needs to cool down and the fat comes on.

Same annoying noise here I was going to have the dealer hear it, but by the time I get there the noise should be gone. So i thought there is no way the dealer is going to believe me and will think i'm
I hate this noise and it's embarassing to hear on a 60K car.

Is it that loudh? the reason i'm saying because when I mention above that my car does it and you have to pay attention to it, its not like someone walks by my car and notice it. I do hear it or maybe its just me but I notice it when I turn on the car in the morning and at times I have the habit of leaving my driver door open when turning it on and that's when I hear noise. I guess some are louder than others..

As I mentioned back in post #3, there is a known problem with the 350 and 550 engines in which the oil pump makes a noise until the engine warms up. It sounds almost as if a piece of the exhaust system is rattling against the undercarriage, although the sound is more dampened than metal on metal and has a resonance to it, so that it does not sound in perfect cadence with the rotation of the engine. Not every engine does this. In fact, it is rather rare. It is a problem known to MB. There are ways to diagnose whether your car has this particular problem--one of which is to have your service guy keep the car overnight, raise the rear of the car a foot or so above the front, and then start the cold engine. If the noise disappears, then there's a pretty good chance you have the oil pump problem. This problem has been reported to the Technical Assistance Center, and my SA gets monthly reports on the lack or progress on a fix from MB.

I also have a 2007 e350 4matic Amg sport package with 100k miles, I'm having the same problem start the engine in the morning, that low knocking noise for about five to ten second the noise goes away however I allow the engine to idle for about five minutes before driving.
I'm thinking this is a oiling issue, losing oil pressure over night and when you start the engine in the oil is not getting to the bearing fast enough so the problem could be the oil pump.
I hope someone come with a good solution for this problem because it is driving me nuts.

If you all think these 350/550 motors are loud at start up, go to a dealership and listen to a 276/278 motor with direct injection.
These motors are like a church mouse in comparison. Not to mention all these metal moving parts need to heat up and expand. I feel as though any vehicle with a combustion engine is noisy at start up.
Or run a thicker oil.
