2004 E320 Sport cigarette lighter problem

Hey, all. My 2004 E320 Sport's cigarette lighters (front and rear) work intermittantly. I use them for charging mobile phones.

They function well for a short while, then no current, thus can't charge phones. I checked all fuses, all seem ok. Any ideas how to fix this???

Thanks for suggestions.

have you tried moving the fuse from the switched to unswitched position? IIRC there's a 53A and 53B; one is switched off when the ignition is off, one is always on. I might have the number wrong.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, moved the fuses. And, took a very close look at the fuse and saw some blackening, however, the fuse looked intact. I've ordered some new ones (15A) from AutoZone next day delivery. The stores are closed here due to the virus scare (Bradenton, FL).

I also removed the ash tray assembly/door and checked the current to the front cig lighter, it's hot and wires look good.

It's a weird problem, happens intermittently, and often enough to prohibit my iPhones from charging on a long trip. I don't think a fuse would cause that, but I'll find out.

Further suggestions welcome.

The two fuses, one for each cig lighter, were intact but both had a small bit of blackening on the top of the fuse blades. I changed both.

I'll let you all know how it goes. Thanks for the help. Further suggestions are welcome.

Any chance your charger adapter is making poor contact and is overheating and shutting itself off?

i could have been helpful to post a pic of the fuses. Could be the charging cable too. Lots of cig usb adapters are 2.5 amps, if so through it away and get a 5 amp adapter. Your phone will charge faster with the 5amp one

Thanks for the replies. It's not the charging cable, I've tried several. Replaced the fuses than drove about 900 miles from FL to VA. The lighter charge was still intermittent, but seemed a bit better, but still wonky.

To my amateur eye, it wouldn't seem like an alternator problem since nothing else is awry. Still seeking answers. If anything comes up, I'll post it.

Thanks.
