E220 or E270 ??...

I´m buying a E Station, but I´m not sure if I should go for the 2.2 cdi or the 2.7 cdi engine... the difference is of 20hp, 500cc, 1s in accelaration and 9 mph in top speed. The E220 is the most common engine here in Portugal, but I think it has a reason to be so, because the price difference is about $12000, and the performance differences are just those. The car doesn´t bring any more equipment (the E270) and I would have to stay off of some options like the airmatic .. what do you guys think ? should I go for the E220 or the E270. I think the E220 would be a spectacular ride with all the extras I add it, but wanted to know other opinions.. (just for info, a E220 costs base, in Avantgarde version, about $72000... cars are really expensive over here and their price is proportional to it´s engine size..what makes the E55 a $182000 car )

Thanks !

The 280 CDI is already available. A "tuned down" 320 CDI with 6 cyl. Go for that!

I would take an extended test drive in both vehicles 220/270CDI's and then make a decision. The difference in performance will be most noticeable in overtaking situations. Forget the 0 - 100km figures, forget the top speed and just look how quickly both can accelerate from say 70kph - 120kph.

I have the 220CDI in my Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and we are very pleased with its performance.

Good luck with your choice.

The E280 would be way too expensive.. I´m not sure, but I think a 2.2 would be a good engine... If I was looking for extreme performance I wouldn´t go for the E, but instead for the 525d or the Audi A6 3.0 V6 TDI.. I really liked the quality of the MB and I became a fan of it, but this engine thing is making me think... I think I´ll have a better car if I have a 2.2 with Airtronic than a 2.7 without..

It all depends on the type of driving you do.

i have the E220CDI and have test driven both e270/320cdi b4 i bought it and to be honest the is little diff in the initial surge.....OK so the 270 and 320 give u a good kick in the seatback and the 220 is not as aggressive but who tends to put the foot down 0-60. In motorway driving going at 60 overtaking is easy with the 220cdi. If you want to race Beemers and the like get the 320 otherwise you'll regret it. If you like ur options get the 220. The ride on the avantgarde is more sporty so having airmatic might soften the ride for u.

With an estate the 220 engine for a loaded car may be a little underpowered but otherwise it should be OK. You need to really test drive all back to back to see the diff urself.

yeah.. I think I should do it... does the Automatic transmission handle well with the 220 ? by the way, is there a comparison between the 5 series and the E wagons ?

Thanks

The automatic is essential with a MBZ . Not only for resale but for the extra pedal in the manual can be a bit tricky for some since you also have a foot-park brake.

auto works well with diesel a good combo.

The Mbz wins the estate battle with the new 5er. It comes second to the accord estate in practicallity but then why would you choose the Honda.

I agree with what you are saying, but I wonder how SBC 'Hold' works with a manual gearbox???

We have a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 213CDI which has the 220 engine and a 'Sprint Shift' gearbox and we are delighted with the performance.

I drive a 220 CDI - no complains about power for that price. I personally wouldn't buy a 270... doesn't run that smooth. Better buy a 280 or 320. But I said - my budget is fixed, a 220 powerful enough so spend the money on extras.

I have a 270CDi and have no complaints about the smoothless. It is a very lively engine, does 0-60 in 8.4 secs and has lots of power throughout the rev range. In the wagon I would have thought the 220 would be a little under powered.

The SBC Hold does work very well with the manual box apparently.

yeah.. I think I´ll go for the E220 because It´s a well powered engine (compared to my actual Audi A4 1.6... ) and I prefer lot´s of extras to some more hp... the difference is about $12000, so that´s a lot of extras..
