w211 4matic e350 motor mount axle removal

Hi All,

Been digging around and I don't know what to believe or not - or if it's applicable to me

I have a 2008 w211 e350 4matic. Pelican parts says i need to remove the alternator for pass side and the axle for the drivers side . . . . .

But, i'm looking at the forums and folks are saying you can remove the wheel well covers and it'll come right now? Is this only for the e550?

Has anyone done an e350 4 matic that can shed light on this? i really would like to avoid removing the alternator and/or the driver axle.

thanks!
dave

It will come right out. Pelican Parts sometimes doesn't have specific guides for 4Matic models. The 2WD cars are much more difficult.

i don't get it - they say to remove axle for the driver side . . . . if there's an axle it's a 4matic? my indie shop wanted to charge $1100 for the mounts . . . i mean . . . i spent 10 minutes taking the wheel well out and then threw some extensions together and got the top bolt loose pretty easily. i have the mounts coming on friday - this should take me an hour or two . . . .I'm waiting to loosen it and then realize it won't fit through the hole. I know the new ones will be about half and inch more in height - to shove back in.

one thing i was looking at.

when i lift the engine a bit do i need to jack the wheel as well so the axle isn't extended/angled too much?

You'll need to jack up the engine slightly, maybe only 1-2 inches above where it normally sits. I have heard of people simply popping out the mounts on the 4matic W211's, so I don't really see any major problems in your way.

Were you able to get your mounts swapped? how did it go? I'm about to do this job on exactly this same model - W211 2008 E350 4matic wagon.

Done this job twice. Just lift the engine with a block of wood from the pan CAREFULLY after removing air intake up top. Remove and install from fender.

Yeah - 4matic. Take the wheel well fenders off.

I loosened all 4 bolts.

use a jack with wood to lift engine from oil pan.

just enough to get the old out and then a few more inches to get new In

So I finally did this job on my car. Just as OP and everyone else has said, it's easy peasy (on a W211 4matic with the M272 engine). Put the car on jack stands, loosen the top and bottom bolts on the mounts, remove wheel and fender liner, jack up the engine with a piece of wood a few inches, and the mount can be pulled out and replaced. I was surprised at how much I had to jack up the engine to place the new mount. My original mounts were badly collapsed and I think the originals with 231k miles on them. I'll post pics in a separate thread if I can ever get time to.

Just did this also this weekend. One bolt was snapped off and the other bolt just spun as the mount was collapsed. Might be a good idea to get new bottom bolts, the top ones were fine. Got some similar bolts at Home Depot but going to replace them as soon as I get the MB bolts.
