Tinting Q

I have a three week old E500 with Appearance Package, which provides slightly tinted windows. I'm thinking of of having them tinted darker - say to 40 or 50%. But I see from other posts that this requires replacement of the rubber window gaskets with felt (sometimes they call it "moleskin"). I am concerned that this will increase the risk of either air or water leakage or otherwise present problems. I know that some of the forum members have had tint done and would appreciate their reactions -- downsides and upsides. If I do it I'll likely use the Art of Tint, which seems to be highly recommended -- or if someone has a different recommendation in NY metro, that would be appreciated too. TIA.

I have 20% on mine and it looks black from the outside. I would think more than that frankly is overkill. Also, there is some new stuff out, forgot the name, but my dealer was cogniscent to not install it as it interferes with sat antenna if you do a hidden install for the sat.

The moleskin will not cause any problems. It is VERY thin felt applied to the inside seals.

I would definetly use the Art of Tint, especially if your in the nyc area. They did my e500 and so far not a single scratch on the windows with the tint. Benz's really have a problem with the windows scraping the tint which causes it to look horrible and gives it a scratch like effect. Moleskin is def. the way to go.

i think you have the scale misunderstood...the lower the number is the darker the tint is...if you have 40% or 50% tint...well i don't even think such a % tint even exists...

There are 48% and 50% out there. They are the lightest shade you could get. Just remember that the percentage of the film is the amount of light being transmitted. The higher the percentage, the lighter the film. Limo tint ranges from 4% to 5%.

any recommendations for tint place in South Florida? I had Ceramic Formula 1 tint installed on my E, and I'm starting to see scratches on driver side door (one I use the most).

I would like to get the felt installed. Anyone do this themselves?

thx,
alf
