Question Hypothetical W211 - Cadillac question.

First and foremost, I am not looking to provoke war here nor am I attempting to fire over the bow of our beloved W211, more so simply asking for an honest anonymous vote and, if compelled, a respectful posted opinion.

If GM / Cadillac offered you a chance to trade your current W211 for a new 2005 Cadillac STS (factory order – no mileage) with absolutely no out of pocket costs (inclusive of local sales tax and registration/title fees) would you do it?

no caddy for me but if i had a chance to get rid of the 500 with any outta pocket expense it would be gone for a car of the same value. audi a6 - bmw 545 just my opinion. not trying to bash either if you like the caddy i say go for it

Hell no! I wouldn't trade my E55 or my old E320 in. They just look boring and look like boxes on wheels. They need to get the styling up. This is my opinion so don't flame me.

The Caddy's too big. Our E500 barely fits in our garage and the STS is 7" longer. Now, if the General would offer to trade me straight-across for a CTS-V, that might be different.

I agree with DWP. I'd trade it for a CTS-V

Possibly for the CTS-V, especially if your car is 2 years old and with many miles. Only concern is how well the CTS or STS holds up in the longt-term since American cars generally begin to have many mechanical problems after 70k miles.

After 70K? More like 5K miles for me. Service is horrible and so's the quality in my Yukon XL Denali.

No Way!

While the Caddy's (all of them) are much better cars than the old Caddies, and the contentent & prices are creeping up to E class levels, there is no comparison of the "beefyness" of an MB to a Caddy...None. In 36 months your E class will ride like the day you got it, the Caddy will feel like a loose old car.

While the Caddys are much more repected by Actors/Musicians/pretenders, that have at least 6 years or so of "mellowing" or "aging" in the barrel to develop the smoothness of a fine wine. During that time, their reputations will improve if it has been earned, and they will be sought after because they are desireable, not simply because of the Rock & Roll & "performance" images of the TV comercials. They are young, brash, and fresh, but they are not the "fine wine" of an MB...yet.

Just like a Rolex may not be the finest, most accurate timepiece you can buy, they are sought after because of their universally admired looks, image and ageless style.

If MB doesnt watch its flanks, both Caddy & Lexus will overtake them as the luxury vehicle of choice... I do think though, that MBUSA is exerting pressure on the Fatherland to keep a very carefull eye on Quality, and Fully functional, world class electronics.

Question Are You Sure?

Sounds to me like none of you have bothered to drive the new STS.

All options for less than $65K, some of which aren't available in any MBZ!

Drop by your friendly Caddy dealer and take a test drive, and then decide for yourself.
Be sure the car you drive has either the 1SF or 1SG option, as those are the cars
that have the proper suspension. The "Plain-Jane" cars do not have it.

I was dissapointed with the interior. the CTS is 10x worse. IKEA cheap interior. Better than before tho. I'd stick with the E. STS, although nice, needs slightly better execution on style.

Its a nice looking car, Its got a lot of gadgets, but its not a Benz & its a 1st year GM product, which means you are part of the R&D Team, and next year they will add whatever should have been in the car in the 1st place. They ALLWAYS do it.

If the goal is to drive something new, thats one thing. If its to drive a proven thoroughbred, stick with the Benz.

I will tactfully say that a British Motoring Program test drove the Cadillac and it did not get rave reviews.

No way! It's a good car but not a Benz. Road & Track did one of their comparisons several months ago of 6's: STS, E320, A6, 5xx, etc. I don't recall all the details but the STS came in first and slightly ahead of the E320 primarily because of lower cost. If memory serves me right, they were close on many categories but MB was way ahead on styling and interior.

A comparably equipped STS would be $10K-12K less (MSRP) than my E500. One could be overvalued and the other undervalued but I think that the market is telling us that the MB is worth a lot more than the Cadillac. With all of the competition in the automotive marketplace, I would think that it's a pretty efficient market and is correct on this valuation.
