2004 E500 4MATIC REAR AXLE'S

I have a terrible popping noise when turning, especially slow sharp turns forward or reverse. Checked diff and did a oil change , looked good and no sparkles so Im guessing its the rear cv axles.

I cannot find rear axles for the 4 matic...anyone have a part number ?

Or maybe an alternative idea of what is popping in the rear. ....maybe a wheel bearing?

I look forward to a reply sometime in the next millenia ?

Popping is usually something in the suspension. Usual culprits: arb bushings or arb links

So after extensive research we believe this could be an issue with the transfer case fluid EOL. We are going to flush out the transfer case add new fluid and see if that takes care of it next week. Been super busy with other projects .

I will try and remember to report back!

Ah, okay.
(I needed an axle replacement recently because the "ABS ring" in it was shot.)

You'll want to replace the fluid a second time after about 30 miles. Had to do it on mine and worked great.

Weird...Im doing the work (finally) this weekend. There is probably zero chance I do the service then redo the service again in 30 miles since im on jackstands and its a pain in the *** to do the work!

I am going to swap fluids ,start the car and put it in gear to spin things around then replace the fluid again. Hopefully that will help and I hope it takes care of the issue.

Thanks!

So did the transfer case fluid change(2004 E500 4matic) and the horrible popping/grinding sound is gone. Its hard to believe it was as simple as that but it was! I measured what came out and replaced the fluid twice. I did not drive in between just started the car and let it the wheels spin a little in drive and reverse.

Pretty easy job but would be easier with a lift. Getting too old for jackstand projects but didn't feel like paying $475 to have a garage do it.

Hit me up if anyone has questions.

SandyGear was right!!

Drove the car last night and the issue returned although it went away after driving a little, never the less I am going to take the car out for a long drive this weekend then do the procedure one more time then go on another long drive.. hopefully that will do the trick. Hopefully this thread will help someone down the road? I will report back.

Did another fluid exchange. The transfer case still hangs up a little when cold but it all goes away within 5 minutes of driving and Ive only driven the car maybe 5 miles since this second service. Im guessing it will keep improving as we drive it longer. Time to move on to other issues I have with the car.

Thanks!
