I think that 2-tone grille is way too overstyled.
I think that nothing beats the OEM chrome grille, although I was really trying to find something I'd like more, for purposes of differentiation. I think the only way to go aside from the chrome stocker, is all black, which I considered, but knew I wouldn't like from a styling standpoint as much as the chrome.
Also, you can play with coloring the inner slats body-color of the car, but that could look really bad too IMO.
Do you have bigger pics of the car with the middle-bottom of the AMG bumper blacked up? I've been REALLY considering doing this, but end up convincing myself out of it, as I think it'd end up looking dumb.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the paint will chip like a fool and you will constantly be repainting it...
best option is to vinyl wrap it.

I agree that painting a grille could be a major P.I.T.A in terms of chipping, etc.
However, from what I understand, vinyl wrapping a grille isn't very efficient, as all the small/thin areas, and constant edges will eventually make for a peeling problem. Also, from what I've heard, vinyl wrap is very easy to "chip" itself.

The star came off on your star grille?
For the paint, I'm sure if you went with some thick coats of it on the grille, you'd be fine. Worst case, if it chips, then paint it again.
Interestingly you call the star grille the "CL" style grille, while I call it the "C" style grille.
Just messin'.

I've also heard that film is very uncertain on a grille, and I'm sure it'd be hard to get a clean fit around some of the grooves, while peeling would be prevalent possibly.
Might as well just paint it and hope for the best.
If I were you, maybe just trade your star grille for someone's stocker, in regards to having a stocker to put on the car when you give it back.
Think about it this way, technically speaking, an aftermarket grille is of WAY less cost than an actual OEM M-B grille, so you'd be coming out ahead.

Also, post pics! I thought about a black grille, for differentiations sake, but I'm just in love with the stock chrome grille, and my rule with modding is: "No mods unless it actually looks better to me". We all have our tastes though, and the black grille will certainly give your car a unique twist on the roads, if you're looking for that, and looks hot if done/complimented right on a white car.

Where'd you get the license plate LED lights from btw? I wasn't gonna do them, but figuring since it's a cheap mod, I might bite sooner or later. I've just heard they're a PITA to install, and I'm incredibly not handy when it comes to these things. Lemme know how hard or easy they were to install!
I know what you mean about the modding thing. I was that way with my Mustang a little while back. Fortunately I'm able to keep away after some initial little mods. However, it's a test of mind to do so!

If the ebay grille refers to the 55Tech grille I agree that the middle star mounting is a bit flimsy. It has bunch of tabs on the "cylinder" and the genuine MB star but both parts could easily come off after some vibrations in car front. Also, they are easy to be stolen.
For this reason I used 2-part 20 min epoxy and glued the pabs in the inside. I just glued around tab holes where I could see the chrome tab as glueing the chrome tab to the grille frame glues both parts at the same time.
