E350cdi W212 - new member - help please !!

just got a E350cdi Avantgarde saloon with the 18" 5 spoke alloys as extra. It's my 5th E class over the past 20 years - the ride is dreadful - you feel every bump in the road and I assume this will get worse as the tyres wear - I think they are run flat tyres. Been in touch with the dealer today but not hopeful they will do anything. Anyone know what might help ? eg.
1. If I buy 17" wheels and get non run flat tyres ?
2. Can I fit non run flat tyres to my 18" wheels ?
3. I previously had a W211 with MB 5 spokes - what if I get some of these - will they fit ?

any other ideas ?
thanks for any help

I have 18" wheels as well and I think the ride is smooth. Are you having a E350 CDI Bluetec? The one you have a AdBlue tank where usually the spare tire is located? If that's the case you'll have RFT:s and that could explain the harsh ride.

I also picked up the W212 Bluetec but have the 17" wheels. No issues with the ride at all even with the run flats. The 18"s look much better but not sure I will give up the ride to get the look.

Since you have the Avantgarde, your first choice should be a sporty ride. If so, keep the 18" wheels, and replace the RF tires with same size soft ride tires, like the Yokohama V550 or V102. You will notice the difference right away and will see how well they wear and how safe they respond to your pedal to the metal.

Best thing I did to my car upon too premature failure of the Contis that were provided from the factory.

As for the wheels themselves, I would not change the 18" since the suspension, brakes and general operational geometry was intended for these size wheels. MB engineers designed the precision machine of your choice. Therefore, your confidence should be extended to 100% of their design and recommendations. I know I do (to the extend of requesting materials sources to MB due to dealer non compliance), and I feel I got a unit I can upkeep to outlive me.

You could also change the the 16" with 225/55 tyres, then you have a softer ride.
I tried a car with 17" and 16" and with the bumpy EU roads the 16" is softer/ smoother. Both cars was avantgard version.
