Gas Mileage Sucks

My Gas Mileage is just crap. I live in a congested area, and 268 HP is more than good for what I need, however, with 268 HP, I expect better MPG (I know this is all improving next year with the new motors). At least if I had 500 HP I could understand that there's a reason my motor drinks 13-14 MPG around town.

Yesterday, I actually got 13 MPG, which shows two things: My city is all quick stop and go's, and my car doesn't do all that great in the city.

That's my mpg on a bad traffic day or heavy right foot with the 6.2L motor

Yeah, I just looked at my overall mpg per day one and the average is 17. My normal city avg is 17-19. Freeway is 23 or so.

10-13 is when being really naughty.

K-A, that doesn't sound good....
tire pressure's okay?

Yeah, it's WEIRD! To be fair, it was mid 14's until I got into a parking lot, which took it down to 13.5 or something.

I do sometimes get 17-18 though. I don't (and can't) drive fast, but maybe I've started driving impatiently, and don't feather the throttle enough? I'd assume that even with jolty go-stop-go-stop-go driving, I should get at least 15 MPH.

Yeah, T.P is all good, just pumped it up a little bit even.

My Highway is also OK, 25-28, maybe more in optimal conditions. Just a smidge under my W211, although that motor was more broken in.

fwiw, when I had my e350 I didn't think the mileage was very good either.

imho, I don't think there's enough difference to not get a V8 (if basing it all on gas mileage only.) I guessing the upcoming DFI motors will fare better. But then again a MB isn't really a car for great mpg, V6 or V8. They all need to go on a diet before you can get really good economy.

Over several years, you'll see some savings with the 350 over the 550 (and 63.) But it's kind of like having a Prius. The price of those cars are way over inflated and you pay a premium. It takes several years to get your money back.

btw, oil prices are steadily rising. I'm watching my XOM stock and it's creeping up every day. Be ready for higher prices at the pump soon.

2016 Audi S8 Plus/ 2011 Mercedes e550 4Matic//Gone:1985 500SEL/2000 e320 4Matic/ 2001 e55 Kleeman
That does suck!! I've been getting 15 mpg in my e550 4matic in mixed driving. I haven't yet determined the split between local and highway. The 2000 e320 4matic that I replace got a solid 18 mpg in local driving. One would have thought that the new v6 would have gotten at least as good a mpg with efficiency advancements. My 2001 e55 with full Kleeman mods(compressor, 525 hp) gets 13-14 in local driving. Maybe it will improve with age. Regards. Ned.

fwiw, the 7-speed in the E63 over the 5-speed in the E55 does seem to help with mpg. I read that MB will be introducing a new 8-speed soon. All this gear spacing does help with economy but it gets a bit scary when you think about those millions of parts in a modern transmission......

I only have 2300 miles in 2 months of having the car but so far avg 16.1 combined driving from day one. I was expecting 13-14 so I'm quite pleased if it stays around 16 mpg. When I had an W211 E320, I remember that car avg no better than 15 mpg

You guys must do a lot of stop start driving.

I do not have the conversion to US mpg but my E550 has a lifetime average of 12.5 liters per 100km ( 22/23mpg imperial from distant memory) up to 10 liters per 100km ( approx 28 imperial MPG) on an easy open road cruise at 110 Km/hr ( 65 mph)

I think this is sensational from a decent sized V8.

Mileage for the E550 is the most disappointing part of the E class, don't get me wrong I enjoy the car and I'm very satisfied with all aspects of it except mileage (I average 17.1 around town with a little highway mileage and can't get more than 25 on the highway). If I was attaining mileage equal to WGB that would be outstanding, perhaps its our crappy 91 oct CA gas but who knows?

683 miles on the clock now, and the I/C shows 23.4 mpg avg. E350 and not exclusively city center driving, but a mix of canyon and business district driving, and a few miles on 680.

My car has 2000 miles on it and has averaged 22.6 MPG combined city/highway since new. I have never reset the computer. My 2008 S550 averaged about the same over the 22,000 miles that I drove it.

I travel 20 miles a day for work and get decent milage. A half a tank gets me through the week. When I had my vette It would burn gas with normal driving.

On my current W211 E63 I have 49752 miles. Average since the start of mixed city and highway is 16.4 mpg. I live in the NYC metro, so I do real stop and go, but I have my fair share of NJ Turnpike and GS Parkway, plus some Rt. 80 and PA Turnpike. As good a sample as you can get. Before this car I had a 2003 E500. That car had an average of 18.0 mpg for 50293 miles. I would hope for the same 18.0 on the W212 E550 I have on order.

Your highway gas mileage tells me you have no problems with your car. Low city gas mileage comes strictly from between the steering wheel and seat back. Low here means less than 15 mpg.

With a powerful engine it is so easy to "burn it" without even knowing you are doing it but you are.

Enjoy the car man!

Powerful? The current E350 V6 motor is pretty much behind the game at the moment.

K-a. Has your mileage always been this bad or just got worse. Definitely noticing mine is worse in winter given my tire pressure is lower, longer to warm the car up, and winter gasoline mixture.

My MPG in NYC is about the same 13-14 MPG depending on traffic conditions. There is nothing wrong with your car. As soon as I get to a highway - it goes up to 19-20 and even higher if I stay on a highway for long time.

mg-E550: Actually I'm not sure, but I noticed the 13-14 lately, so it might have to do slightly with conditions, but although we are having a cold Winter here, it isn't East Coast cold.

aeggroup: Cool, yeah that's what I thought. With bad stop and go, and if you're not being incredibly gentile with the throttle, it just gets bad. Unfortunately, given the power ratings, the current 3.5L isn't all that efficient.

I'm not a Gas Mileage freak, and I really don't care about HP all that much on a car like this, as 268 HP is more than good for me, but it's just bothersome that not only are we getting less HP, but we're getting worse MPG with it. With the next gen V6 coming out, I don't even care about the 300 HP (sure, I'll take it, but it won't make much of a difference to me) as much as I am jealous of the fact that with that, comes better efficiency.

K-A do you drive your car in sport mode? If you do, you may find some leakage there. For some reason in sport mode most of us like to drive it a little more aggressively.
