I finally did my muffler delete this weekend, I love it. I'll post a video when I get a chance.

If you could get the sound of your idle after the rpm has settled too, that'd be cool :B

Did any of you guys save your mufflers? Is anyone willing to open one up and see what is inside? I know the w211 guys have hollowed out the mufflers before and had a much better overall sound/note that was more balanced than straight piping/deleting. I am very interested to know what the internals look like so as to be able to get a professional opinion as to expected/potential results.

I saved them but I want to keep them intact in case I need/want to go back. I won't lie, the exhaust drone can get tiresome on long highway drives. My solution right now is to just crank up the music :B

So I ended up going to a different exhaust shop to get a second opinion. It turns out the first exhaust shop didn't completely weld around the mufflers so there was a loud leaking noise. Fixing the leak didn't fix the idle noise. We determined it wasn't the tips that was causing the bad idle noise, it was just a crappy muffler choice.

I ended up deciding the eat the $550 (pretty sure I got completely ripped off now) I spent on the first exhaust job to get a whole new thing going. We decided to go with a x-pipe and something he called "turbo tubes" to get a smooth deep sound. Anyway, after everything was said and done, the new exhaust sounds amazing. I'll try to get a video soon.

I was thinking of just straight piping after i take the mufflers out. Good idea? Bad idea? Do I have any other options with this?

I would leave the resonator alone.

nicobaires did it on a 550, sounds fine, he started a different thread with videos of his new sound.

Here's a video I found on youtube of a guy with an E350 muffler delete

What are the dimensions of piping I would need to buy to replace the muffler? And any website recommendations?

The guy told me it's because of the stock decorative exhaust tips in the bumper, it's creating some kind of air vortex making a stupid sound. He said that he'd have find some exhaust tips the right size to weld to the decorative ones in the bumper so that there's no gap for air to come in.

Does anyone else have an unsatisfying idle sound? Like when the car is around 500 RPM. I feel like it might be because the mufflers are so far up, but I don't know anything about exhausts so there's that.

I'll try to get a video of the idle tomorrow.

do you have before pictures?

I did the rear resonator delete on my '12 E550 turbo, it made no difference at all. I was going to go the Magnaflow type route eventually, but after months of driving a silent car, I kinda like the stealth mode now. It's fun to blow the doors off someone in silence.

if anything, resonator delete will give you a better airflow (if replaced properly), but not the bark you want. muffler delete or upgrade would.

in case anyone is looking I have E63 mufflers for sale. You remove the resonators and just do xpipe to E63 mufflers and it will sound good. The only reason I am selling is because I could not put the 63 (pre facelift) tips on.

I just did a resonator delete and swapped it with an X pipe and it is significantly louder. I am deciding if I'm going to keep it just because I can hear a small amount of drone going up big hills or something similar. I'll give it six months and see how I feel.

With just removing the rear resonators, there's nothing different from stock except the cold start has a bit of sound to it. I hear nothing in the cabin while driving, I can hear the turbos spool more than the exhaust with the windows down. If you cut off the stock mufflers I'm sure that's annoying. I almost went the way of aftermarket mufflers, like Magnaflow, but I got used to "stealth mode" speed without sound. I've gunned it in front of cops accidentally several times and they don't even blink because it's silent speed in a sort of mundane looking sedan. I'm sure if I had no mufflers I would have been pulled over.

Here's an old one I found on my phone. Don't mind the sluggish start. Needed to get a new battery which has been since changed lol.
