2011 E550 Won't Shift

Not a happy guy this evening - my wife's brand new E550 (not 4matic) is sitting in the garage with 900 miles on it. Took it out earlier today and it ran fine. Wife went to take it out this evening - starts fine, but will not shift into reverse or drive. Stopped and started a number of times trying to reset - no change. Called MB and waiting for a tow........anybody else having this issue?

That sux! Does it at least go into N?

hezman Apr 11, 2011 08:34 PM

Nope - just sits in park and nothing I do moves it to neutral, drive or reverse. I sure hope this is something simple - there are so many electronics in this vehicle - great features as long as they work!

Well this is a pistol - tow guy shows up and gets into the car, starts it up and shifts it into reverse, drive or neutral. I knew I should have video taped the malfunction. Anyway, off to the local Benz dealer to see what they come up with..now I'm not trusting this car.

lol, Sounds like the car needed the good old "Ctrl+Alt+Del"
Whenever something weird happens to any of my vehicles I always turn it off and then on again. If it happen 3 times then I know I have a problem...
Let us know what the dealer comes up with.

Thanks for the interest. I sent a note to the dealer letting them know I would see them Tuesday. The only thing I did not do was to wait a few minutes between the restarts - maybe this was not enough time to allow a re-set. Hopefully there will be a read out on the computer check to solve this 'mystery'.

This happened to me once. I tried to re-start the car several times and it wouldn't shift out of park. I locked it and left it for a while, came back and it worked fine. Hasn't done it since. However, I saw some other posts on here that said if you turn the car off, LOCK it and unlock it, it should work..

Hope that helps.

And I'm sure you had your foot hard enough on brake when trying to shift from P...

I read somewhere that MB is recalling a bunch of vehicles for a bad brake switch. Since the brake must be depressed to shift out of park, I think this could be something as simple as a bad brake switch. I hadd a VW Passat Diesel that did this same thing. This does not sound like anything to worry about, and I believe, other than the annoyance, it will be a simple fix.

Got a quick voicemail from the local MB dealership - computer readout indicates the problem is a switch (of some sort)..........will get the details Thursday and advise.

Transmission not shifting out of park due to faulty Internal Servo Motor; replaced with a new part number. This was the second motor replaced on a 2011 E-Class by this MB store.

Glad they got it resolved for you. Always nice when they have seen it before.

Stuck in Park

This is the 3rd time my car has been stuck in park. This car has been in the shop and has more problems than 2008 Dodge truck that has only been in the shop once. Seriously considering selling!

I am apprehensively waiting for my 2014 to turn the engine off at a stop light and then not restart. The electronics in these cars makes them walking time bombs.....
