Opening driver door while rolling, ouch!!

Just as the header suggests, i found that the car automatically throws itself in park which is dangerous and correct me if im wrong but will ultimately damage the tranny. Anyone else found this odd and is there a way to disable it?

thanks!

At what "rolling" speed it happaned to you? I often part with driver's door open, both in drive and reverse - it never happened to me at "parking rolling" speeds.

What I did see, and this is very good, is when car is turned off and key is removed from egnition while tranny is still in D or R, car shifts to P by itself. Very cool.

With the engine on and in D and moving less than 5mph, when you open the door it automatically throws it in P and the car jams up abruptly.

I've opened the car door many times while the car is in D and R and still rolling and it has never thrown the car into P.

I just get a red warning on my display saying something like "car door open while not in park".

I haven't tried to open my door while IN Reverse, but sometimes I do
open my door(and it does go into park) and then engage reverse to see behind me if I'm backing up somewhere.....
don't know how to disable it however.....

good luck and enjoy

Mine did the same thing as exil3's when in drive. I usually "roll" by the newspaper, open the door, and grab it. The car lurched and immediately went into park. Scared the daylights out of me. I have not tried this again!

Just got off the phone with the dealer, he called it a "safety feature" and told me it was initially implemented for keyless-go cars and then adopted thru the rest of the fleet. CRAP if you ask me!

I get exactly the same. Mine is a P1 car. It sounds like an issue only for P2 cars.

Perfect example of why someone would open the door of a moving car.

This will be a thing of the past due to "safety" reasons.

pretty sure that's a safety feature...may be a nuisance, but it can be overridden by taking a few extra steps...

would like to think that the down-side potential is much greater than the "cost" of making sure that you have enough pressure on the pedal, or just making sure that you are stopped when you open the door and then select R or D...

if your car rolled forward and smashed someone between a wall in your car when you hypothetically forgot to push the little silver button for P you would be suing Mercedes claiming that it was a design flaw, negligent on their part from an engineering perspective and ultimately their responsibility that the situation even manifested.

unfortunately for you, MB engineers consider all stakeholders when designing these vehicles..they don't solely focus on the complete satisfaction of the driver.

imo it's a very fine balance from a design perspective, and to their credit, i would always side on the edge of caution.

i think that's why we buy these cars, right? because they are over-engineered?

I believe that this is supposed to be a trait of the 2011's only?

It would be a nuisance for me if my car did that, as when I park at my house, in order to line my car up properly, sometimes I roll with the door open.

My 2010 P2 doesnt have any problems. I have to manually open/close my gate so I roll thru, way under 5mph mind you, with the door open all the time. But, at the low speed the car is actually moving this convo may not really apply to me

But it's not such a bad problem to have. A couple times i've had to run after my tahoe because i've left in in gear and hopped out to do something

So this morning i tried something different. First opened my door, then put it into R and everything was fine, was able to back out with door open no prob (the display turned red, thats about it tho). The AUTO P feature only kicked in when opening the door while already rolling. Eventho i kinda figured it out i dont plan on repeating it, dont want to potentially damage anything, love the car.

My only issue now lies where the prob began, at the car wash. They always open the door while rolling to make room for the next car in line. The first and only time i saw this happen, it wasnt good to hear the tranny lock up like that. guess i just have to remind them every time and hope they remember long enough to not do it

Actually now that I think about it, anytime I roll with the door open, it's always with me opening the door before rolling, rather than opening it while rolling, and it's always at very low speeds (under 1 MPH even).

That does sound scary, re: the Car Wash thing.

Wouldn't be surprised if that feature is straight from MB's Legal Department.Easier to convince a jury that Bill was at fault for his ruined transmission than to convince a jury that Bill's widow and 8 kids deserve nothing because he ran himself over.

Happened to me too. I was waiting for my car to be driven up by a valet. He was very busy at the time and I guess he thought he would save a few seconds by opening the door before my car came to a complete stop. The tranny locked up and the valet looked at me and was mortified. He couldnt stop apologizing.

Safety feature? How many times a year does somebody run themselves over with their own car?

What if you're cruising down the road at around 35 mph and realize the door is ajar, can you open it to slam it shut? Will the transmission lock up at 35?

It doesn't have to happen 10 times a years for them to implement a safety feature. If one person dies then that is one too many. Besides the fact that this feature is easier to implement than to pay lawyer fees.
Here is a link that another member posted in another thread... bottom line is that if her Mercedes had this "feature" then she would be alive today.

Answer your own question...can you put your car in P at 35mph? NO

Completely ridiculous comment.

Strange.

I have tried this with my car and the transmission DOES NOT go to park when car is rolling slowly and I open the door. Just the display goes red saying door is open.

My tranny goes to P if I open the door and the engine is shut OFF.

Is it sure that the ones experiencing this don't actually have the engine OFF while opening the door?

I do have the telematics update installed in my car. I never tried this before the update. Could this make the difference?
