90 degree engines will have balance shafts to smooth out the engine. Where you might find a difference is at idle or with the sound of the engine.

"2012 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet specifications:

E350 Coupe and Cabriolet:
  • New Direct Injection 3.5 Liter V6 motor;
  • 302 Horsepower, 273 lb-ft of Torque;
  • New 7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-Speed Automatic Transmission;
  • Acceleration from 0 to 60 MPH - 6.1 seconds (6.3 Cabriolet);
  • Rear Wheel Drive;
  • Fuel Economy: 18 mpg - City, 27 mpg - Highway (18/26 Cabriolet);
  • Turning Circle: 35.3 ft;
  • Engine Block Angle: 60 degrees.
E550 Coupe and Cabriolet:
  • New Direct Injection 4.6L Bi-Turbo V8 motor;
  • 402 Horsepower, 443 lb-ft of Torque;
  • New 7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-Speed Automatic Transmission;
  • Acceleration from 0 to 60 MPH - 4.9 seconds (5.0 Cabriolet);
  • Rear Wheel Drive;
  • Fuel Economy: 16 mpg - City, 24 mpg - Highway (16/23 Cabriolet);
  • Turning Circle: 35.3 ft;
  • Engine Block Angle: 90 degrees."
Slightly better fuel mileage than the current engines. I imagine fuel mileage would be a little less for the 2012 E sedans.

I do think some of these Benz websites are getting their stats twisted and we won't know until we know.
Wow! I hope this benzonly info is incorrect as 16/23 for the new 12 550 Cab is weak considering the similarly portly XKR Cab with 510 HP is 15/22 and with a 6 speed auto vs a 7 speed for the 12 550.
FYI, the current E550 cab is 15/22 hardly much of an improvement for the 12's other than power.

Yes sir, I hope so too.

Over the past 2-3 months I've read it both ways on various websites. That is, even without lean burn and start-stop efficiency should increase approx. 20% vs. only a small efficiency increase as cited by benzonly.

My gut feeling is that early discrepencies between the websites may have been due to some of them not knowing about or accounting for the differences between the way the Euro and U.S. motors are equipped.

The Benzonly info is disturbing in that the differences are now widely acknowledged and their posting is June 1 - the latest. Doesn't guarantee its accurate, but it sure tilts in that direction.

Re your pending XKR, 15/22 is great for a motor with all that testosterone!

Please promise you won't desert mbworld.org after you get her RJC. I've got another 2,360 questions to ask you.

Seriously, can't wait to see the pix.

Thanks Al. I'll still be around for sure. Even though we all may banter a bit with one another at times it's a great group of people. I will post lots of pics when the car comes in, just a the mercy of the Jag rep right now...argh! Still love the E Cab, it's a great car for the money.

i'm a little weary about airmatic suspension, i've heard horror stories, but as with most of my vehicles, i dont keep them long term (lease or buy). so hopefully it craps out after my ownership.

Also, If it's a 20% increase in MPG, that puts it at about 20mpg city. thats pretty good.

I'm beginning to think the 20% may not be the case as I just checked out the new CLS550 on mbusa and I believe it was 16/23.

So which way are you leaning? At this point, I would be inclined to wait for the new e350 unless you got a killer deal on an e550, unless the performance is important and you really want airmatic. If you live in an area with generally good roads, the airmatic could be a nice feature. If the roads are generally crappy, especially in the winter, then my feeling is that the airmatic is a mixed bag(not even factoring in reliability and repair costs), I personally would prefer a good standard suspension overall. If you go e550, then I would start nosing around but the deals may get better as we move forward. I bought my e550 in December and got $7,500 off MSRP. Some other members did even better with year end sales. Good luck. Regards. Ned.

Thanks Ned I'm actually in NJ as well so as you probably know the roads are def on the crappy side. How is your airmatic holding up?

-E350 Sport/Luxury new direct-injection V6 engine (302 hp, 273 lb-ft) and available 4MATIC all-wheel-drive.

would any of you consider getting the outgoing E550 model? because it'll probably be about the same pricing wise, and with dealers being more aggressive to get rid of the older models.

The current E is still a great vehicle, but 17/24 MPG (which is about the same as the V8) really sucks.
I would definitely go for 2011 E550 instead of 2012 E350... if you can get it for the same price... Iwould even go for 2011 E550 instead of 2012 E550!

The problem is I don't think you can get it for the same price...

The reason I got E350 is because its residual value is a lot higher than E550, so it makes huge difference in lease monthly payment. If I would buy E-Class to keep, I would probably go for E550, but to lease - E350 makes a lot more sense...

Regarding 60 degree engine block angle; it will be only on V6 engines, not on V8's...

0-60 in 4.9 secs for the 2012 E550 coupe??? That's only 0.1 second faster than the 2010 and 2011 models. I expected better figures considering the new turbo-charged engine, though, the mileage has been improved by 1 mpg for both city and highway. Not much of an improvement over the previous generation engines and turbo engines are harder to maintain than naturally-aspirated engines.

I'd wait for the car mags to compare the old and new as MB's #'s are normally quite conservative.

Road & Track shows the 2010 E550 sedan 0-60 in 4.7s, Car and Driver shows the E550 coupe 0-60 in 4.6s, Edmunds road tested at 5.0s...or was it 5.2s

Right, now we have to wait for the #'s of the new versions...

I haven't had any reliability issues with the airmatic. My issues have been with what I consider its shortcomings, that is its performance over rough roads and how it handles potholes, with a major jolt and thud, as if the suspension runs out of travel too soon. With 18 inch rims, you are way more suseptible to blowouts, of which I had a double going toward the Lincoln Tunnel right before the tole booths in February. I attribute the high incidence of blowouts with the e550's and the s550's to a combination of low profile tires in combination with the airmatic suspension that doesn't give enough on impact. As I said, it is a good sport suspension, many owners love it and don't agree with my negative assessments. Regards. Ned.
