LI03.10-P-052286 SEPT11 knocking noise from engine, inspect cylinder walls for scoring if found engine must be replaced. Affected vehicles are mostly production dates from 8/10 to 11/10 but might be outside this range situation was corrected as of engine # 2729xx 31932895 & 2739xx 30441186.
First I want to thank Konigstiger for his helpfulness and information. He is fantastic.
Has anyone had this situation to occur? For M-B to state engine must be replaced makes it sound like an extremely serious situation.
I'm concerned because I only put about 5,000 miles per year on my car and wonder if this problem could turn up after the warranty expires at 48 months and then M-B says I have to pay for engine replacement. Makes Hyundai/Kia 10 year/100,000 mile warranties sound even better.
My E350 does have a rattle or chatter upon cold starts for about 15 secs., but service tech stated that was normal for the car. Is it?

Yikes! Engine must be replaced? That's gonna leave a mark of M-B's bottom line.I wonder if it applies to diesels....although mine has been as solid as a rock so far (6K miles).

Looks like it applies mostly to the earlier 2011 MY's. Mine is a 3/11 build, so hopefully I'm in the clear.

My diesel has been solid as a rock for 23K miles so far. Just an incredible power plant.
