Thinking of buying a e220 cdi
Love it BUT is there anything that I should look out for? Any quirks ?
Once these recalls are done - fantastic ! I just did 950kms Sydney to Brisbane thru 50 km limit towns on highway and sitting on 110 where possible and got 5.0 litres to 100km on fuel with stacks of power.
Basically has 125 kw power (that is around 163 hp) from 3,000 rpm up and a large 400 nm of torque (that is around 295 ft lbs) from just 1400 rpm up to 2800 rpm - huge flexibility out of a 4 cylinder 2.1 liter engine. super smooth.
Drive away price in Australia is around US$ 85 to 100,000 depending on options.
"Official" fuel figures are 5.9 liters to 100 km (39.83 mpg) - I got 47.08 mpg on mixed highway and towns over 650 miles trip.

Diesel here costs about US$ 1.40 a liter ($5.60 a US Gallon)
Petrol ( Premium Grade that you need for Mercs) around US$ 5.40 a gallon but fuel prices vary wildly as prices not fixed by regulation.

The E220 Diesel is unfortunately NOT available in USA but the Bluetec E350 now IS!
I looked at one at the dealer a week ago and liked the idea of buying a new one, and was thinking of euro delivery - but I am troubled that, in the boot where the spare tire should go is a big tank instead where some "blue" dye is supposed to be added to the Diesel fuel.
Too much trouble, AND loss of the spare tire troubled me....this makes me hesitant.
So if I get one, probably I would probably have to buy the petrol powered version.
Diesel fuel in USA costs MORE than petrol, significantly more; though diesel vehicles get far higher fuel economy than the petrol.
But Americans have for the most part NOT warmed to diesel engines in passenger cars. Resistance is huge, stemming in part from the HUGE debgacle in 1978 when General Motors introduced the disastrous Oldsmobile 350 V8 "diesel" engine which in fact it was a petrol engine "designed" to run on diesel fuel, and horribly engineered, with predictable.....and horrendous... results.
That said, the Audi 2.0 diesel performed wonderfully -- ALL over Europe; the manual version is rated formatic (which I had) 44 mpg. The auto gets 39.
Thatr is sensational for a large passenger car! Fuel, though costs around $8.00 per gallon in europe, so that is one reason why so many cars there have diesel engines.

Have already done over 3k on the clock since delivery date of 8/25/12.

It's a woderful cruiser, the V6 is adequate (no E220 Diesels available in the USA yet)
The only issue so far, is that the gas gauge is not totallly accurate, it only ever reads to 3/4 full even when the tank is totally full. (This is irritating). Anyone else had this problem?
Likely covered under warranty though.

? i've also noticed you have both the carpet mats and rubber mats on. it's ok for the passenger side and the rear two but better to take out the driver's one. that big round thing on the lower left corner is a button to snap on the floor so that it won't move. looks like you already took out the carpet mat. as for the gauge, either that or the fuel tank/sensor has a problem. have the dealer check on it. enjoy the new ride
