Tranny taking 1-2 seconds to engage when set into D gear Issue!!!! Need Advice!!!
Hello everyone,
I am driving a 2011 E350 Sport 4matic (manufactured end of 2010), it is a fantastic ride, however, i always feel the tranny need to take 1-2 seconds to engage when i set to D-gear. If i step on the gas immediately after into D-gear the car seem to jerk a lil and have some kinda clicking noise that i dont know how to describe. I always will have to wait a lil before i can accelerate smoothly.
Is this typical for all E-class or Mercedes transmission? i dont really like the "wait for it to engage" feeling!
P.S. My 2009 C300 Sports has the similar issue.
Regards,
Addison.

My 2012 350 is the same way.. i just learned to be patient, im not driving aggressive anyway.. Soo the little hesitation doesnt bother me, im just used to it.

Get used to it. It's the way it is. Not a sport car and this 'feature' proves that....it's a luxury sedan. Don't try a three point turn in an emergency situation or you will get t-boned.

Agreed with the last two posters. When shifting from R to D in a quick fashion, the Tranny is anything but quick in shifting. It does make for a more luxurious/smoother operation, but not so good in panic situations at all.

I wonder if that has do with the tranny starting in 1st gear as compared to starting in 2nd gear when in comfort mode. I will have to try it in "S" mode and check it out.

I used to like "E/C" mode best, however, lately I can't drive in E. The lack of a first gear gives it too sluggish a takeoff, and I'm not talking power as much as pep. In "S" mode, this is fully remedied. The car is much lighter on its feel and peppier feeling off the line.

There was a recall for some 722.9 equipped cars. I don't know if the W212 was one of the vehicles but I know there were many cars with this issue and the fix is a simple TCU re-flash and its 100% fine there after.
It should not take that long to engage reverse or drive.

i agree with you! S mode really makes it more predictable on the road...sometimes E is just not responding enough! some may think its E350 not E63 but thats just our opinion! cheers! =)

Agreed. I find the E350 to have enough power for my needs on the road, however, in E mode it can be too sluggish. S mode is just right!

Thanks Hype and Addison.
Yeah, I had it vinyl wrapped with matte in that middle portion. Just a simple thing I wanted to do to help set the car apart a little bit.

My ML550 takes about 1 second or so to engage D from P. However D to R or R to D takes about 2 full seconds. 3 point turns truely requires patience. Coming from a history of nearly all manual transmission cars, this is very very slow.
I do not particually like this characteristic of the tranny, however I do not beleive it is an issue.

i believe we just have to get use to it. Try S mode, then you will feel the difference (Quicker in engaging). Cheers! =)

Would be interesting to see if this slowness (which i too experience, especially going from R to D, ) helps with longevity/reliability over time.

Probably. I remember older or other (let's say more "analog") cars that would be instantaneous.... Sometimes if you jump the gun you could really feel the tranny taking some impact and "bumping".

Does anyone else notice when you put the tranny into S mode that it dumps 1st gear really fast? The only time it holds the gear is if I floor the gas pedal.

That makes sense. The tranny is told to save you as much gas as possible, also it's a very short gear, so it just snaps by.

I actually think the slow shifting will end up hurting the tranny more. Go from reverse to drive and don't give the tranny enough time to shift and it is a pretty abrasive shift if u hit the accelerator too soon.
