I think you simply press the "end call" button while it is ringing.

I didn't know this. But wouldn't the caller know you're sending them to voicemail?

With my blackberry I hit the volume button and the ringer is cancelled but the caller goes to voicemail after x number of rings. This way they just think you're unavailable.

Not necessarily.I don't think there's any hard and fast rule regarding how many rings must occur to prove that you're not being ignored.I think that with some carriers,at least, the number of rings can be set by the owner.

Also,if a call goes quickly to voicemail it could mean that the phone's turned off,has a dead battery or is in a dead spot...not connected to a tower at that moment.

Hitting the end call button in the car is no different than using the same button on your phone to ignore the call.

I have the same feature on my phone. I think if u press end call after the first ring, it only rings once or twice and goes to voicemail. Whereas if u press mute instead, it rings the full amount and goes to voicemail. That way the other party doesnt know u sent them to voicemail.
