Switching to 17" Tires?

As far as switching to 17"'s, will the speedo automatically compensate or do you need to go to the dealer for an adjustment?
If the speedo and transmission auto-compensate for the tire size difference, I would consider switching to 17's not just for winter tires, but maybe more permanently for the advantage of higher sidewalls on the roads in the east. I would also consider getting even heavier sway bars front and back.

The diameter of the 17" standard tire and the !8" tire is about 25.7", so they are the same size and the speedo should not be affected. There are owners who put 17" wheels on with snow tires for winter and revert back to the 18" wheels and tires for summer. The narrower 17" snow tires are an advantage in winter. Not only is the sidewall higher but the tire is narrower.

use a tire size calculator (depends on width, ratio, etc. ie: WHICH 17" tires)

here is an easy to use one:
