Earlier today I made the announcement that MB World now has a wiki. In case you missed the announcement, read it here

What I would like to see in this thread is two things:

1)Your feedback on who is the guru of this model section. What I would like to see is the usernames of the 1 -2 people you look to for technical information about this model of MB. We would like to recruit them to help us in populating the information in the wiki.

2)Requests for items you would like to see added to the wiki.

Wiki suggestion: Filler door not closing
 

This (Fuel filler door not closing) is an ideal candidate for the Common Problems section of the W212 Wiki.

I would like an explanation for the oil dip stick readings on the 2014 MB E550 4Matic sedan. When I pull out the oil level dipstick after the car has sat for many hours, the plastic end that measures the oil level is dry--including the bottom-most part. When I then reinsert the dipstick and pull it out, per owner's manual, the dipstick shows that the oil level is normal. These two events are counter-intuitive and have no explanation known to me.

Lets pretend that a submarine has a dip stick attached to the hatch. If you punch a hole on the bottom of the sealed sub, when you open the hatch the dipstick will be dry. However when you place the dipstick back in the sub, the sub is now filled with water.
I am not an MB engineer but that simple concept I assume plays some part in the process.
btw, you are always supposed to check the oil on the second dip in ANY car or motorcycle.

Thanks,Tjdehya. This is my fourteenth car, but my first MB. It is also my first car with a flexible-cable dipstick. Your reasoning is clear but I wonder if it the only explanation. Do all modern Mercedes come with the flex cable dipstick? And do all have the differences in oil level reading as described in my post? The car, perhaps incidentally, has the M278 engine.

As a newbie to the site myself, but having worked on a lot of different vehicles because you have to when economics rule-which is why myself and everyone else knows is why you and I come to this site-to get some real help, from real professionals and semi-professionals alike that share a mutual passion and want to help you succeed albeit common courtesy or to save you time and money, and to a great extent at least point you in the right direction to ensure success with your MB whatever that is. Yes the 278's all have flexible dip sticks due to the motors configuration, and always remove accumulated oil residue to allow for a more visible and accurate reading of the oil level. Sorry sort of OT maybe.

Johnand, as a newbie, this is a pretty darn good site already, perhaps hearing from other MB series professionals on how they do it or must do it can assist us with W212's.

2. Please do anything but add much about the "Off Topic" portion of this site. It may hurt the overall image of this forum, without intentionally doing so. Just my opinion though:)

Agree!

Drain your oil from the pan and measure it, my brand new E350 was low by 2 quarts and I was getting the same dry dipstick.
