NTG 4.5 firmware update- iPhone comand online
Hi, first post, Im new here. Ive read all over the internet about a firmware update for the command system allowing iphones to finally work with command online, which is supposedly due this month. Has anyone heard anymore about this or gotten the update? Is this just a rumour or is it a legitimate update? This is for my old man's 2012 E250 Cdi in Australia.
As a side note, just to demonstrate how lucky you yanks are in terms of pricing, a base, stripped E250 CDI lists for $110,000 in Australia, and option it up and you are pushing a list price of around $130,00k, which is $US135,000. A base E350 lists for around $130,000 and loaded you are looking at $150k. An E63 wont get you much change out of $300,000 and dont even mention an SLS, because it will cost you around $600k driveaway.
But back to the topic, what is the deal with this rumoured iphone compatible firmware update?

As far as I know, Mercedes has not announced an UPDATE to allow iphones to work with command online.
The current command 4.5 system works with Android and many other smart phones although the function is not enabled on US cars. I have internet working with my Samsung Galaxy Nexus phone in the US...the software is there, just disabled.

BlackBerry 9900 talks to COMAND and allows online access as well, of course, after enabling the feature through engineering menu.

Im aware it works with other phones, but who still uses blackberry's? The rumour of a firmware update for September was on this forum a while ago, is it just scuttlebutt?

One to search for things around the car and have them automatically put into the nav,
Two is to use google maps to plan the route and send it straight to the car.

You go to google maps, then you get directions, make changes to the route if you want to, hit the link button in the top right hand side, then send it to your mercedes mbrace email address. When you get into the car, comand online automatically uploads the route into your nav.
There is a specific option for mercedes benz, have a play around.

You can get internet access from an comand 4.5 equiped car. In the US the function is turned off but all the code is there and you can turn it on easily in the engineering menus. It will not work with iphones because they use a different bluetooth stack. Comand supports DUN, the iphone uses something else.
Now, having enabled the internet, it appears that you can only use it when the car is in Park. That's not all that helpful when driving on an interstate. I have asked numerous times why the internet connectivity is useful. There is not much that you can't just do on your phone in the first place and your passenger can do that while you are driving.

Just an update for anyone who is interested, searching the internet has yielded a german article which I used google translate to decode. Basically it said that there is an update to comand coming in January 2013, which allows the system to connect to the iphone and use its high speed internet connection. There are also more apps coming.
Whether this means a new comand coming on the new E class update, or a software update for existing comand systems wasn't clear. The person speaking was high up in Mercedes.
