The W126 is indeed very nice. The interior definitely looks like a descendant of the current W212 interior.

I really like the 450SEL 6.9 W116 from the 70s overall, although the interior was still less evolved.

Choices are good and very necessary, but never give the consumers tooooo many choices. Otherwise you'll have the current state of certain S Classes striped in neon purple or hot pink interior lighting. (Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler would NOT APPROVE! ).
Hey, Hey, Hey, K-A, just leave the S-Class out of this, you just turn off the interior "club" lighting and the perfume spray , and enjoy the rest of the features - The S-Class, extra comfort package features like the perfume spray, "club" lighting, the bidet, the on-board shower (in the trunk), and the C-Class in the trunk spare car, are there for those who spend more time in their car on the road and don't have time to stop for hotel accommodations and rental cars!

If I could do it, I would definitely retrofit Steering assist. Yeah I saw a review of the W222 from a Canadian perspective and the fluff options are a bit gaudy ("guah-dee"). OBTW yes I did trade - in my E350 for an S350 and its a lot of fun to drive since I still drive these cars like I drove my former C-Class (I still practice with the one they give you in the trunk for entertainment). Not quite as agile, but if you plan ahead, you can drive it very hard.

Ok so now back to the E-Class Loyalists vs K-A bash thread.

I am late to the thread but just having traded my 2009 550i on a new 2014 E350, I have never been happier.

The 550i was brilliant on perfectly smooth roads at 80+ MPH. The Mercedes is superior at everything else.

I made the reserve trade 535i to 2014 E550 and I reached the same conclusion. For me the E class is a better car.

Gentlemen, as you know, comparing an MB 350 to a BMW 550 or the 535 to an MB 550 is not a fair comparison.

Heck, I moved from the 2010 350 to the 2014 550, and it's entirely a different ballgame that is oh so good!

It is absolutely a fair comparison. If you compare everything except engine performance then it's completely fair.

It depends on the type of driving I do. City mileage is aweful. My 8 mile commute into DC on surface roads usually results in a fuel economy of a between 12-16 mpg. The car really excels on the highway. It is more fuel efficient than my wife's E350. On the long trips I have taken, I have gotten between 26-28 mpg.

Interesting, Munich, because I was wondering about the "city" driving mileage of my 2011 550. "Wondering" meaning I was thinking the computer was being wildly optimistic. My commute is not more than 10 miles from near Fairfax City into Reston, all surface streets. I'm seeing from between 17 and 18 ish by the time I arrive at work, and that includes an approximate 5 minute warm up time in the driveway.

Have not really put any highway miles on it yet, but my '05 E500 would pull down 26 or 27 pretty easy, and I saw a high of over 29 - once. If the 550 gets similar I'd be quite happy.

Dan

EDIT: Just realized you have the TT 550 - which gets a bit better mileage than the NA 550.

You are right.

In nearly every measureable way my 2014 E350 is better than my 2009 550.

I am very happy with my decision and although 5 years should not make it fair, it is not even close.

My 2010 E550 on pure highway driving at 79 mph speed gives me 23 mpg.

On mixed hwy driving with average speed of 55 mph I get 26 mpg.

City traffic is at around 18 mpg.

These numbers are calculated by the mileage between fill ups but the city driving is a "guess" as I don't drive a tank of fuel in city traffic. I'm estimating it from the mpg display showing 20 mpg when it actually is about 1.5 mpg less.

I take my 2011 E550 on a 3,000 mile trip each Spring, from central New Mexico, through Utah, Idaho, Oregon, to eastern Washington (Wenatchee). This is mixed desert and mountain driving, with elevations between 7,477 ft and 780 ft, starting at 5,323 ft. The roads are mixed Interstate, four lane, and desert two lane. Temps between the 70s and 100. Sometimes pretty windy. I have a lot of equipment in the trunk, and I weigh 236 pounds @ 6'3", so the payload is the equivalent to two people.

On each trip, I carefully track fuel usage at the gas pump, for only the open road driving, 1355 miles each way. Fuel is mixed brands, premium, octane varying by elevation. (I do not track mileage for the casual use at the destination.)

I am a conservative driver. Nevertheless, on the road my driving was as fast as 85+mph, typically ~10% above the speed limit. (I have on a few occasions exceeded 110 mph when passing a semi on highly visible straightaways in the desert --- seemed like 60mph )

My mileage on the combined 2,710 mile round trips, per year, is as follows:

June 2014 -- 28.44

May 2013 -- 28.80

June 2012 -- 27.17

(The computer would say it's 0.5 to 1.0 mpg more -- so much for technology.)

I must add: that V8 literally loafs, quietly, on long uphill grades, rarely a downshift --- what a pleasure! (Where do you put the bobbin?) And on long downgrades, judicious use of the paddles eliminates braking drama.

This is simply the finest road car I have ever driven in over 55 years of driving, in terms of handling and comfort.

I felt the same about my '05 E500. I never quite understood the term "effortless motoring" until I bought that car.

So far I'm pleased with the '11 550, but logging some serious highway miles will be the real test. The only nits to pick so far is the too light (to me) steering effort and that it seems to need a little more attention at the wheel on the highway. The 500 was an absolute train in that last regard.

Munich thanks, are you using just the car's mpg reporting or are you measuring using the amount of gallons at a fill-up and how many miles were run on that tank before fill-up?

I just use the car's computer and I am a bit of a lead foot, too. My commute is probably has 50 stop lights!

I'll plead that it's the car's fault. Big, long ugly semi, pull out and see a couple miles of clear, straight desert highway, add pressure to the throttle, and I'm pushed back into the seat. The engine stays quiet. The speedometer winds up, and in a few seconds it's 110mph and the semi is in the past. The car feels like absolutely nothing is going on, glued to the road, hummmmmmm . . . . . .

Not my fault the car jumps up to 110 without making any noise!

I have, I mean I could see that happening. Especially with those PRIUS Drivers out there! They really get under my skin sometimes - all that attitude!, cutting people off, or just trying to hyper-mile and thus constantly getting in the way of those who are driving faster than they are

The cabin felt so much more high tech, heads up display that projects your speed as if its hovering out infront of the bumper, the screen was about twice the size of ours. And the Bang and Olufsen sound system.

Not saying it was all good....The ride felt notably rougher then the E does, even on comfort mode. And no panoramic roof. And while im not positive on the engine specs, it felt slower then my E even though its roughly the same HP. And its sticker was about 11k more then my E, and mines loaded....

Overall i gotta say its a nice car, and i may give it a sereous look when i trade next time.

Has anyone else driven the 550i? thoughts?

Nice kindergarten joke.

regarding all these features, I can't locate any car in US have at least distronic plus. I doubt that when new E class will arrive in US dealership, any of a car will have all these nice safety and luxury features. We can expect only panoramic sunroof and LED headlights. Why? Because people here are not interested in all these electronics.

If these features are presented as part of the standard configuration in the USA, they will be there and people will purchase the cars. I got the impression that MB was trying to boost their E-class sales by offering more features. Add in the fact that cheaper cars are incorporating these features, MB will have to offer more of these as part of the standard USA configuration to keep interest in the cars. If they can keep the costs near to what they were typical for the E-class over the past few years, that would be good.

When I got my C63 with distronic I thought what a waste on a sports car. I was wrong I quickly saw it's utility. When I got my CPO 2012 E550 I made sure to get one with distronic b/c I really wanted it in a sedan. My 2016 E63 has distronic with steering assist. It literally drives itself for short periods of time. It's pretty cool.
