brand new e350... already a mishap

My wife's 3 week old e350 4matic was parked and looks like a bicyclist got too close and hit the drivers side mirror.. the mirror shattered and the white part of the housing (the top part) cracked. The turn signal lens disappeared as well...

Living in NYC this falls under the "***** happens" category but holy sticker shock! the parts dept wants $1200 for the mirror glass??? the white cover comes painted oem and is ~250 so while expensive, I dont need to paint it -

Are there after market makers of this mirror? I couldnt find anything on ebay... Its heated+dimming.

If I cant find cheaper parts, Ill have to get my insurance involved.

Parts.com will sell it to you cheaper. It's orignal Mercedes - will be shipped to you from a delaer in Illinois I think.

$1200 bucks for the parts sounds like a Big Apple-ism..

Sorry to hear about that , you can try sponsors on the MB World as well
I assume you don't have auto folding mirrors or you didn't turn them on

MB has not shipped these models to the U.S.A. with power folding mirrors. Canada and elswhere - yes. Not here - yet.

You'll find roughly similar prices quoted in some earlier posts about mirror damage, so it's not just a NY thing or your particular dealer. Along with similar posts about these expensive mirrors also being targets for thieves.

We got this car 3 weeks ago after both our previous cars got totaled by Hurricane Sandy. Being the car was parked, if I claim this, it fall under the comprehensive part of my insurance which was just hit for 2 cars a month ago.

Am I facing some rate hike or the risk of being kicked out by geico - my insurer, if I claim this?

Im not sure how this works.

thanks everyone!

C-Class is a 204 not a 212. The glass and housing might work, but unlikely that the door mount will fit the 212.

Also, the first auction has euro glass in it.

I thought it was the same. But you can verify it with Konigstiger. Also, The 2nd one is broken. Didn't see that. What is does Euro Glass do?

Same thing happened to my wifes Toyota Highlander and the cost was $1000-there is not even a turn signal light on that part!

Did you check if the alignment or motor of the mirror got damaged as well when they hit it.

do you see the line on the left of the mirror? on the left of the line, that part is kind of like a convex mirror. very cool and useful feature .

I too had a mirror recently 'shaved' off.....that price seems about right, good luck on the hunt for a less expensive one!

Found the cover prepainted online for ~250. I can get my glass guy to replace the glass with a normal mirror for $100... so I will have a heated non dimming mirror.

trying to decide if I want to go via insurance or pay out of pocket for a non-dimming glass

For now, my glass guy used scrap mirror material and rough cut a piece to glue over the busted mirror so wifey can drive around w.o being at risk - another reason I go to his shop for year already (its an auto repair + glass shop)

Price seems too good to be true, but may be worth a shot:

There probably is no real good reason why our rear view mirrors do not have the blind spot convex at the outer edge. Pretty much all European new cars have this. It is a very nice feature and works well.

I actually bought European mirrors for both sides for my Audi Q7 that I had. Made a big improvement in seeing the blind spots.

A detail to know about the European mirrors is that the driver's side mirror also is a convex like the passenger side mirror is. Here our driver's side mirror is a straight glass, which is why dimming mirror glass usually is used on on the driver's side mirror only. The convex on the passenger side reflects much less light from the car behind to the driver's eyes.

Got the cover at the MB dealer in NYC for $200 - called them to confim it does come painted and they where cheapest... the online vendors all wanted 260+ shipping and parts.com was adamant it doesn't come painted... idiots.

anyone need just the turn signal + lens? looks like you cant buy JUST that, it comes with the cover.

There is some advantage to finance car since full insurance is required and such problem is just covered.

Give your insurance agent a call and see what he says. You dont have to file a claim if it's not worth it but at least see what he advises and stop guessing if your rates will go up. I would ask and find out. Good Luck
