New to mercedes - when to expect a loaner
My 2010 e550 is my first mb, so I'm not sure what to expect. I have it going i this next Monday for some service work, all warranty (wood trim, sdar going inoperable on restart, mbrace update, leather separating on center console). They didn't mention it, but I intend to ask tomorrow about a service loaner. What is the norm for this kind of thing? I think it's fair to expect one, it's a luxury car and I expect luxury service. Are my expectations too high?

Your expectations are not high at all. In my case I make sure that I ask for a loaner everytime I schedule a service appointment. They might not have one available when you drop your car off. You most likely will end up with a C300 or GLK350 as a loaner.

if your dealer is fairly large, they might have enough loaners on the lot and your probably don't need to reserve one. if not, request for one while you make the appointment. you can either do it over the phone or online. worst scenario is get their shuttle service.

As part of your servicing appt, your service advisor should have asked if you needed a loaner or not PRIOR to your arrival. This way, they will know in advance and save a loaner for you.
I've brought my car many times for servicing...and each and every time, I got a MB loaner without problem. One time, I got the newest C class with 20 miles on the odometer as my loaner.
You should expect nothing less from MB.

I ask for one every time, why?, Because they have loaners, and my time is important. I can understand if they say no, if I'm getting something done in less than 15-30min. That's fine, but hours - no way. Whether I get a loaner or not, I don't want them to ever rush for the sake of quality - "Do the service/repair right the first time and don't make condition of your car worse (damage it) than before it came in!"
The last loaner I had was a 2013 C300 4matic (3.5L, 248hp, 251lb-ft torque).

MB’s
I hardly ever go to the dealer anymore due to having my indi shop 5min away and plus better loaner cars :P but when I do I usually get a GLK350. I refuse the W204 because I cannot live it even for a short persiod of time. The GLK is more versatile. Usually you want make sure you request a loaner a couple days in a advance.

It truly depends on the dealer. My dealer has always offered a loaner to me. They also will actually bring the loaner to me and pick up my car for service. I have a great dealership that truly understands customer service.

In my experience, most dealers offer a loaner car for all service appointments. However, I am aware of at least one dealer who only provides loaners if the car was purchased from them.

I called today and asked about a service loaner. SA told me that they would be happy to give me one of theirs if one is available, if not they have Enterprise on-lot and will work it that way.
As long as I'm paying just for gasoline, I'll be fine. I got an Enterprise loaner from GM before when my Corvette was in for service, so I'd appreciate and expect at least that from MB.
I was happy with the answer, guess we'll see what it's like when time comes to deliver on their word.

They maintain a significant fleet of loaners, and when I has an unscheduled problem and there were no GLKs available, they put me in an ML.

This. My dealer provides a loaner (with vehicle pick up and drop off) for ANY service of any kind. Warranty, scheduled maintenance, upgrades, minor repairs, adjustments, anything.

With my previous 2011 ML I had to bring it in for an unscheduled steering problem. This was late morning and the dealer was out of loaners (and they have a ton).
My service advisor told me that they were going to put me into the service manager’s ML, I’m not kidding.
As I was about to sign off on the loaner car agreement someone returned an ML loaner and they put me in that instead.
They even offered my wife a Smart car once, which she refused. She told them she didn’t feel safe in it.

Actually, dealers are paid a monthly fee for every loaner a dealer puts on the road to offset part of the cost. This was confirmed by my dealer who is a long time friend.

I know when I took my Corvette in the rental fee was put into the warranty work submitted to GM. The dealer certainly didn't front that cost, and I expect MB would do something similar.

My local MB dealer has a national car rental business resident on his lot. Cars purchased there get free loaners that come from the rental company. They're MB rental cars. Not a bad business model and incentive to purchase at that dealer.

My dealer offers a loaner, but the date on when I can get in depends on the availability from their fleet. So, I can get my car in same/next day and if they have a loaner - I'm good to go, otherwise it's the shuttle... But they ask right up front if I'd like a loaner. And the longest wait has been about 4 business days.
Speaking of loaners - I've always re-fueled my loaners in the past. When I mentioned this to the service advisor upon return (actually commenting on how little I needed to add), he chuckled and said re-fueling was really not necessary. Also - all the loaners have been C class - C300.

i always get a loaner. depending on your dealer (for where i am, i have the choice of corp owned or private owned) the size of their loaner fleet is different. i usually call in advance to book my service and tell them to have a loaner ready. never had a problem
loaners i have received were
c class from 250-350, glk, gl
i always tell them no b class tho lolz
