I was at the MB dealer yesterday and I saw both cars side by side. I do like the '14 front face better than the old one. The inside looks very much the same. I saw a black/on black with amg rims on it and the car was bonding with me...lol. Well at least that was my feeling unfortunately I'm not in the market for a new car just yet. Maybe next year I was only at the dealer for service... I wanted to take that '14 home.

I think the w212 is the best looking e class ever. I like both the my10-13 and the face lifted 14. I just think the 14 is much aggressive and sporty looking than the pre facelift. It is much more refined with better interior befitting a luxury sedan. I rather get latest model than the previous year. Again I might sound bias because I got the 14 but I love it.
If you love the pre facelift, you can easily get $7-$10k off msrp right now.

I really don't mind driving either the pre or face lift but if I have to choose, it has to the new E.

I have yet to make my way to the dealer to see the new '14 in person, but my impression off the photos is not good. To me it looks a bit too 'dopey', its got this 'awe shucks...' look on its face. I love my 212, sharp lines, aggressive front, and its V8 chug a tank of gas faster then my roomate can shotgun a beer I wont be moving to the new style any time soon.

I think they should have just introduced the new look on the wagons, see how that played out with the Customers - probably would have been very good. Then introduced a refined version for just the sport model. Then when it came time for the W213, then introduce a more comprehensive redesign (front and rear end taken into account).

Have only seen pictures and TV ads of new E Class. Definitiely would not purchase the Sports version and very doubtful about the Luxury version. The front end just does not look good. Big holes in lower fascia. For what? Gimmicky headlights just to copy everyone else?
E and S should be the standard MB sedans, but with Sports versions available. After all, there are lots and lots and lots of MB's with a star grille and the aggressive front ends. Especially with the CLA now here.

Well, I'm an old fart, who buys an E Class Luxury.

The front end of this 2014 thing looks like something a comic book author would have created. WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO DO????

Oh, maybe be like Audi???

Oh! I see! MBZ has outsourced design to DC Comics!

Well, maybe the MBZ management will get some psychological counseling and quit this crap of trying to make MBZ cars even uglier, with bigger, bug sucking maws, than Audis. (Oh, I forgot, that's "aggressive.")

Oh! Look! Even Toyota is doing it with the 2014 Avalon!

Well, maybe my 2011 E550 will last until 2016. Although I'm starting to worry about that, what with pulsing brakes in the mountains; dead car in the garage; rear suspension crapping out; transmission "whacking" at low speed; TPMS crapping out; DRLs crapping out. I'm told by the dealer that the good news is that the dash gives me a message telling me it's crapping out, except for the dead car, of course, that can't talk. But, then, that's the ultimate, high technology error message --- the car will do nothing at all.

I moved up my lease-end on my 2011 E550 so that I could order a 2013 E550 4Matic special order (Airmatic, side shades, etc) after seeing pictures of the front-end of the 2014. My opinion might have changed if I could have ordered a 2014 E550 with the luxury front-end but I was informed that this would not be possible. Looking recently at the 2014 E550 up close at the dealer only reinforced my opinion that my decision was correct.

I noticed a couple of features on the 2014 that might be noteworthy:

1. The signal/wiper stalk has been moved to where the cruise control used to be. The cruise control stalk is now where the signal stalk was. I was out on a test drive on the 2014 and hit the cruise control consistently when trying to signal a turn.

2. Headlamp washers have been deleted.

3. Airmatic is now an orderable feature w/o incurring the $250 special order charge at the factory.

4 Active parking assist is neat for those whose parallel parking skills leave a bit to be desired.

I do think that the new headlights are way cool, but the star grill is just ugly to me. The new S-class looks awesome from both the front and the side, so I hope that the 2016 E-class will inherit significant design points when it is released. The dual LCD screens are also cool.

Exactly as it should have been in the first place!

2. Headlamp washers have been deleted.
They were totally, completely useless as programmed.

3. Airmatic is now an orderable feature w/o incurring the $250 special order charge at the factory.
The real purpose of this feature was to have your car show up in the morning bowing to the east.

4 Active parking assist is neat for those whose parallel parking skills leave a bit to be desired.
One of these days, after 2.5 years, I have to try that out.

I do think that the new headlights are way cool, but the star grill is just ugly to me.
Hear! Hear!

The Grille protrudes so far out that it will get damaged on a 5mph impact with anything - bad design as far as potential damage is concerned. Grille is far too close to the edge of the bumper.

Have had my 2014 e 550 since this past Friday...fantastic car...I have put over a 1000 kms on it since then. Yesterday I drove over 300 kms on a windy and rainy day and got very good mileage..with a heavy foot 9 litres per 100 and for 1st 80 kms I put it on cruise at 106 kph and was getting 8.3 litres per 100.i personally like the look but the way it handles and the many features are tremendous..I have had several Benz products and IMHO this is by far the best. If you take one for a test you will want it. https://mbworld.org/forums/attachmen...1&d=1369724879

Lukewarm at best

I recall seeing a post in which the new front end design was stated to be a response to new European pedestrian safety requirements. Not sure if that's true, but I agree with the folks who think the 2014 redesign is not an improvement - it's not hideously ugly, just not (IMHO) better than the earlier design.

At least you can order the Luxury set-up. We are stuck with the "star in the grille" with NO choice. Unfortunately, I am not going to waiver on this, no matter how striking the car looks (which it does).

Still have bumpers

Not the kind of bumpers Live Oak and I are used to though.
BTW, have looked at pictures and TV ads again and still don't like the 2014 front end - at all. Even the Audi A6 looks much better. A6 looks even better if you have the solid section installed across part of grille.
Big question to me is: Why did MB abandon the time tested mid-level traditional sedan market? That has been there bread and butter since the 1950's.
Would like to see MB really market and advertise the Luxury version with a return to the 2010 four bar grille, four headlights and smaller openings in front end. Instead of stick LED's, what about four square fog and DRL's. Heck, just use the tooling and dies from the 2010 Luxury versions! Of course, the stand up ornament is definietly part of it. Also, move the "chrome" trim strips back to where they were in 2010.
The Star grille looks OK on SUV's and sports cars - and delivery trucks.
BTW, the new Acura RLX looks pretty good and while list price is more expensive, you can get really good deals on high end Acuras.

I can say this, right now. If I ever buy another Mercedes, it will have the upright star on the hood. The grill star looks cheap -- and it is; it's made of plastic, and that's clear on casual examination.

Now, we know the grill on every MB in current models is plastic, but there is something the screams "cheap plastic" about the grill star.

Sorry, all you "sport" folks, but that's my opinion.

Mercedes, these days, seems "plasticized" to me.

note also that the exhaust on the luxury/elegance model is turned down and hidden from sight. i like this feature as prominent exhaust tips are also too aggressive for a cruiser.

I could live with this version. Not too pleased with the lower grille. Think straight bars would look better or maybe a pattern of some kind.

I've seen two 2014 E's recently. Unfortunately, I could only see the rear 3/4 view or tailights both times. While I like the way the tailights look, I'm annoyed that MB is using the same light clusters for braking and for the turn signal which is a pet peeve of mine; I think it looks kind of cheap. It's not as bad as the Audi A4 (where there's only a thin outline of LEDs for braking and turn signal). Not sure what the lower "white" strip does on the tailights, since it doesn't seem to be for the turn signal (at least not in the US).
